Match Report | 30th September 2009 » Romford Raiders 3-5 Sheffield Scimitars

Face Off: 5.15pm, Sunday 20th September 2009

20.9.09

The Scimitars had an excellent start to their 2009-10 EPL campaign with a 4 point weekend boost. Not the easiest of opposition for the first two games, facing Grand Slam winners Peterborough Phantoms on Saturday at home before making the long trip south to Romford, which was a hostile fortress last season but where the Scimitars raided the points this time round.

On Sunday in Romford it was a scoreless first period with neither side giving way. The Scimitars then set the game alight by taking the lead with a goal in the first 43 seconds of the 2nd period by Arran Strawson, assisted by Joakim Millqvist and Lee Haywood.

With the Scimitars on the penalty kill, James Archer scored shorthanded at 26.05 and this lit the fuse under Romford. They retaliated just over a minute later at 28.24 via Sitko and then Cotton equalised at 37.27 for a 2-2 second period.

After a constructive team talk, the Scimitars came out to finish the game in fine style with two more unanswered goals, as firstly Stuart Brittle combined with Robert Farmer and Lee Haywood to re-take the lead at 41.38, followed by Peter Slamiar putting the Scimitars up 4-2 from passes by Simon Butterworth and Strawson at 43.24. The final goal was an empty-netter scored by Stephen Wallace giving the Scimitars a 5 goals to 3 win. MOM was Ben Bowns for his excellent contribution including saving a penalty shot near the end.

A nail-biting game for the travelling fans but Jess Hamill's home fortress of last season was breached tonight. Another hard-earned two points for a 4 point opening weekend by the new-look Scimtars.

Next Saturday, Saturday 26th September, iceSheffield at 7.30pm, sees the return of Manchester Phoenix, this time with Ed Courtenay partnering Tony Hand and they have already demonstrated their free-scoring ability this weekend.
