Match Report | 30th September 2009 » Peterborough Phantoms 2-5 Sheffield Scimitars

Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 27th September 2009

27.9.09

On Sunday, on Peterborough's smaller ice surface, the first period was fast-paced and free-flowing, with the Scimitars dominating possession due to their speed and excellent passing.

The Scimitars' Simon Butterworth scored the first goal just two minutes into the game, which fired them up further. Joakim Millqvist scored his first goal of the season at 12.58, assisted by Peter Slamiar, for a two goal lead at the end of the first period, though the Scimitars could have put more chances away. The passing was slick and precise with the speed to match and Peterborough had no answer.

The second period was completely different with 92 minutes of penalties causing play to be scrappy and disjointed, which ultimately favoured Peterborough. The Phantoms received 56 minutes to Scimitars' 36, with Joe Miller being thrown out on a game misconduct at 27.03. Despite that, it was a 2-0 period for the home side as the Scimitars lost their cohesion and rhythm. Dwayne Newman gave the home fans a chance to raise the roofwith his short-handed break-away goal at 27.54 and Lewis Buckman marked his last game with the equalizing goal at 33.59 and a 2-2 game.

The Phantoms looked the more dangerous at the start of the third in desperation to claim their first points of the season with Ben Bowns called into action repeatedly. However, Robert Farmer changed the game as he clinched the go-ahead goal on the powerplay at 52.30, followed rapidly by another goal at 53.20 after a great pass from Matt Haywood to Stuart Brittle who slotted it past Wall. Peterborough continued to press forward but without result.

A time-out was called at 57.19 and the netminder was pulled with less than a minute to go but Peterborough had no reprieve as Matt Haywood raced to a loose pass and scored into the empty net for a 2-5 final scoreline. A great team effort with Ben Bowns earning himself MOM for a second time in two weeks.
