WAR OF THE ROSES Game 2
Manchester Phoenix v Sheffield Scimitars 3-3 13.9.09 (Agg score 6-5)
After a great opening game of this contest, it was time for the Scimitars' first visit to Manchester's new rink on Sunday to decide the Cup winner. Manchester were taking home a one goal lead and will have fancied their chances on lifting the Cup at home.
The Scimitars came out to a large and noisy home crowd but were not intimidated as they held their own well in a frenetic first period. Manchester managed to kill off an early 5-on-3 penalty-kill but were able to get on the scoreboard at 05.29 via Andre Mattsson during during a 5-on-3 powerplay of their own.
After some end to end play with a few good opportunities for the Scimitars, they redressed the balance at 11.12 with a James Archer strike, assisted by Daniel Slyk for a 1-1 scoreline in a physical first period. Manchester lost Adam Walker to a face injury in this period.
The Scimitars continued their pace in the second as Peter Slamiar put the Scimitars 2-1 up at 20.55 (assisted by Simon Butterworth and Arran Strawson) to tie the aggregate score. The Scimitars continued to apply the pressure though both keepers were tested with good shots on target before the Phoenix struck back at 29.37 with a close up goal scored by ex-Scimitar Iain Bowie.
The Scimitars then lost Lewis Bell for the game as he blocked an on-target slap shot from Payette with his elbow. Another ex-Sheffield player, Greg Wood, shot high into the net to take the lead at 36.23 and a scoreline of 3-2 on the night, 6-4 on aggregate .
The Scimitars were in determined mood at the start of the 3rd period with another early goal by Peter Slamiar, this time within 25 seconds of the start after an on-target pass by Joakim Millqvist at 40.25, reducing the deficit by one. Despite some intense activity by Sheffield to pull at least two goals back in the 3rd period, Pasi Raitanen was much the busier goalie with his acrobatic saves. He was pulled for the last 1.16 mins but the Scimitars could not pull back another goal before the final whistle.
Manchester lifted the Cup after an excellent inaugural two-game War of the Roses series with an aggregate score of 6-5 and both teams had plenty of positives to take from the games. The Scimitars continued to impress and can look forward to pitting themselves with some confidence against the League starting on Saturday, as well as the Steelers in another pre-season challenge game on Wednesday 16th Sept, 7.30pm at iceSheffield.
Tickets for this game are available from the Steelers Office on 0114 2423535 or on the night at iceSheffield. Tickets - Adult £10.00 and Child £5.00.
