Play-off Quarter Finals (Agg. 8-6)
The tough battle predicted in this quarter final was much closer than many had predicted against the League's 2nd placed team, and it had to be fought out to a conclusion on Sunday after the 3-3 scoreline on Saturday in the last home game. The Scimitars were still missing Stuart Brittle and Simon Butterworth through injury and Lloyd Gibson for both games though with Matt Haywood, Tom Squires and Ben Bowns drafted in from the ENL on Saturday.
The team came out in determined mood on Sunday, silencing the large home crowd by going two goals up in the first 15 minutes of the game after surviving some penalties. With two Milton Keynes players in the box, Peter Slamiar rammed a goal in at 12.16, assisted by Ron Shudra and Ben Morgan. This was followed by Joakim Millqvist on a breakaway, flicking the puck into the net over Hollyhead at 14.53. The Lightning eventually got on the scoreboard at 19.31 with a goal from Clarke and a fast first period ended with the Scimitars 2-1 up despite being out-shot by 23 shots to 9.
The second period opened with the Lightning revved up and their early nervousness under wraps. The Scimitars had to kill a penalty early on at 20.29 only to have the Lightning equalise on a delayed penalty from a deflected shot from the point. Three minutes later MK took the lead through another deflected shot from close in on the crease, this certainly woke the crowd up. Milton Keynes continued to press hard and drive to the net but the Scimitars battled on well. No further goals were conceded and MK took a 3-2 lead into the third period.
Plenty of offensive play by both sides in the third as Sheffield tried hard to level the score and MK to safe-guard their lead, making for some exciting end to end hockey. Milton Keynes grabbed the insurance at 45.03 on the powerplay before Sheffield pulled one back at 53.43 by Farmer. The tempo rose again but MK restored the 2 goal lead at 55.20, firing up the Scimitars to press forward yet again.
The final score remained 5-3 (agg. 8-6) to MK and a shot differential of 48 on Jones to 29 on Hollyhead, with MOM going to Ben Morgan for a great performance.
