Match Report | 26th April 2009 » Sheffield Scimitars 3-3 Milton Keynes Lightning
Face Off: 7.30pm, Saturday 4th April 2009
4.4.09
The Scimitars faced MK Lightning in the first leg of the Quarter Final Play-offs, a game they needed to win to stand any realistic chance of progressing to Coventry. The Scimitars were however missing Lloyd Gibson, as well as Stuart Brittle and Simon Butterworth, with Matt Haywood and Tom Squires stepping up from the ENL.
The Scimitars started well with a Joakim Millqvist's shot nearly going in off the back of Hollyhead's neck. An early powerplay opportunity at 4.46 for the Scimitars allowed them some possession but no shots on goal as the MK defence thwarted them but a shorthanded attack was achieved though saved. The Lightning claimed the first goal at 11.03 as Carr had easy access in on net but that was the only goal of the period.
MK doubled their score at 28.04 after Smulter swept into the zone and the puck squeezed through from a good shot. Very shortly after the Scimitars pulled one back after Matt Haywood hammered the puck in at 30.29. Jones made some great saves in the period with Duncombe starting a ruck after clearing a player away who was crashing the net and the goalie. The period ended with the scoreline 1-2 in a close game but with the Scimitars being outshot 18-8.
The 3rd period saw Archer and Haywood in the box for 2+2 roughing penalty after Archer slashed Jones. Goodman sustained a facial injury at 42.51 from an un-penalised high stick, which not only required stitches but also a stoppage in play as blood needed clearing from the ice. The Scimitars were put under pressure especially losing a defenceman for the rest of the game, but Slamiar worked hard to compensate. Wallace scored at 47.49 to equalise after he caught Hollyhead out of position following a save off M. Haywood.
Morgan scored at 48.35 from a backhand flick coming in from the left wing to give the Scimitars the lead for the first time in the game. The game increased in tempo as both teams trying to gain the two points. Farmer and Towalski were given penalties at 53.44, with MK getting several shots on goal with some crashing of the goalie too, but Jones making some solid saves. A controversial goal awarded at 59.06 which was given to Clarke, which many were certain did not cross the line. The game ended 3-3 so all square to go back to MK on the Sunday for the 2nd leg though the Scimitars gave a good performance. Paul Jones was awarded MOM.
