Match Report | 6th March 2009 » Telford Tigers 6-10 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 5.30pm, Saturday 21st February 2009
21.2.09
Saturday's 16 goal away match against Telford Tigers was an old style 'run and gun' hockey game, with both teams short of players and all bar two of the Scimitars recording at least a point. The Scimitars were still missing their four GB internationals away in China and no players from the ENL to boost the squad. Telford were missing Dan Croft on a lengthy ban until January 2010 and Jake Armstrong through injury.
Telford were the first to light the scoreboard at 0.57with a deflected goal but Sheffield were quick to equalise at 1.53 with a good goal from Ryan Johnson. Robert Farmer put the Scimitars in the lead at 6.04 but the Tigers came back sharply with a powerplay goal from in front of net by Carlon. With 4 goals scored within the first 8 minutes it looked to be one of those games. However there was no further scoring in the first period despite the Scimitars having a 5-on-3 advantage.
Telford re-took the lead early in the second, to go 3-2 up with a typical Dumas strike at 21.10. The Scimitars were not looking too energised initially in this game with Telford always ready for a breakout. Stephen Wallace circled the net unmolested twice before he passed to Ron Shudra who blasted a shot in on Davey Lawrence which he saved with his helmet. The team then got the lift they needed and scored at the end of a powerplay, with Sikl tucking the puck in on the back post to equalise 3-3 at 25.54. He scored a second goal within a minute, at 26.44 but Telford equalised again a 27.06 by Mackriel. Shudra put Sheffield up 5-4 at 28.45 with Carlon sitting a penalty, a lead they held and extended at 32.30 with a strike from Duncombe. The Tigers were by no means finished as Carlon claiming his 2nd of the night at 33.28. Not to be outdone, Farmer claimed his 2nd of the night at 39.50 on the powerplay, ending an 8 goal middle period and a scoreline of 7-5 to the Scimitars.
The final period started with the Scimitars on a 5-on-3 powerplay and Handisides scored 31 seconds into the period. The 9th goal came at 49.28 from Morgan after which Telford had their final strike at 52.18. Some great passing between Millqvist, Butterworth and then to Slamiar resulted in the 10th and final goal of the period at 55.41. The Scimitars scored 4 powerplay goals in the 10-6 final score
These two points were essential for the Copthorne Sheffield Scimitars to maintain its league position against teams below. To score 10 goals on the road was a huge boost to their confidence prior to Sunday's difficult game against Guildford, followed by four games on the road.
