Match Report | 18th March 2009 » Swindon Wildcats 3-4 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 5.45pm, Saturday 14th March 2009
14.3.09
On Saturday the Scimitars travelled down to Swindon with a rather depleted squad but determined to bring home some points from their away double-header. Robert Farmer was away in Estonia on international duty with the GB U18's in the Junior World Championships, with two other juniors who play up to the Scimitars, Ben Bowns and Tom Squires.
The Scimitars were also minus Stuart Brittle, Simon Butterworth and any backup netminder as Mark Lee was unavailable. Several other players carrying injuries or recovering from illness.
Both teams needed the points to stay out of a dogfight for the final play-off position and with Swindon having a 3-1 record over the Scimitars this season. Sheffield had great start to the game when they scored two quick goals at 7.32 via Ollie Barron (assisted Slamiar and Morgan), followed at 8.18 by Iain Bowie neatly putting away a rebounded shot from Wallace, (assisted Matt Haywood. Hayes was able to pull one back at 16.59 unhindered in front of net and the period ended 1-2.
The second period was fast-paced and end to end but with no way past either goalie and the Scimitars concentrated on defending their 2-1 lead though they also had to kill off two penalties.
The Scimitars were more intent on defending than attacking at the beginning of the third but allowing Swindon to have too much possession. This changed when Watt equalised at 50.22 on a rebound after the first save had been made off Aldridge.
The Scimitars woke up, re-grouped and scored at 54.07 to retake the lead again. This was snatched back when Slamiar received a debatable holding penalty at 59.02. This allowed Swindon to equalise with 28.5 seconds left in the game whilst on a 6 on 4 powerplay.
The teams went into OT but Swindon hit penalty trouble with both Kohut and Wheaton in their box but with Slamiar also in on a 2+10. This allowed Sheffield to net the winning goal on a 4 on 3 powerplay to take the two points. They also clinched a definite play-off place with those 2 points gained. MOM was Paul Jones.
