Match Report | 6th March 2009 » Slough Jets 4-3 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 6.30pm, Saturday 28th February 2009
28.2.09
The Copthorne Sheffield Scimitars travelled to Slough to take on the Jets for the final encounter this season with a head-to-head of 2-3. The Scimitars were missing Steve Duncombe and Stephen Wallace but the line-up was boosted by three of the four returning GB University players from China. Unfortunately Stuart Brittle received a season-ending injury which will be a real loss to the Scimitars. The squad was also boosted by having Matt Haywood and Ben Bowns (N/M) for the weekend.
The Scimitars looked good in the first period and opened the scoring at 1.27 with a well taken goal by Robert Farmer skating through the Slough defence. Slough pulled one back at 13.13 as Spearing was part taken down in front of goal but managed to flick the puck up high on a miss hit. The Scimitars re-took the lead at 16.40 by MOM Millqvist who lifted the puck over Skinn's shoulder after skating into the zone from a good pass by Slamiar.
The Jets dominated the 2nd period with the action mainly in the Scimitars zone though with some end to end action at times. Jones and Skinns made some great saves to keep the scoreline to 1-2 for the whole period. Ryan Handisides went hard into the boards and although he attempted a come-back later in the game, he was unable to continue.
The Jets upped the pressure in the third but were denied any further goals until a laser shot from Bowman was roofed past an unsighted Jones at 49.31. A Ciccarello strike at 53.41 gave Slough the lead but Jones saved a break away shot with the play then moving down to the Slough zone with Farmer scoring a great goal at 56.04 to ensure the game went into overtime. The four on four overtime started with the Scimitars skating into the opposition's end, but Slough Jets swept back up into the Scimitars' zone un-hindered by any defence and after some great passing from Ciccarello to Emersic, Slough Jets came out the winners only 46 seconds into overtime.
The Scimitars were disappointed not to get the win as they had had the lead for more than a period and worked hard all game but they did at least gain one point on the road, with MOM going to Joakim Millqvist.
