Match Report | 23rd March 2009 » Sheffield Scimitars 4-5 Romford Raiders

Face Off: 7.30pm, Saturday 21st March 2009

4-5 OT S/O
21.3.09

Just the single home game for the Scimitars on Saturday and a single point after the game was sent into overtime and a penalty shootout just 5 seconds from the end of regulation time as the Raiders fought their way back from being 4-0 down.

The Scimitars continued to miss vital players with Robert Farmer in Estonia winning Gold with GB U18's in the World Junior Championships, and with Simon Butterworth, Stuart Brittle and Ryan Handisides out injured, plus one or two players still recovering from illness.

Both teams played hard for the points which would help determine the final League position and play-off opponents. End to end action throughout the first period and plenty of offensive attack with Romford outshooting the Scimitars, who missed some good early chances. However, it was Sheffield who lit the scoreboard first, on the powerplay at 15.46 by Peter Slamiar (from Barron & Millqvist).

A second goal followed at 16.57, after a misjudged clearance by Ambler went straight to Ron Shudra who slammed it home. Some accurate passing between Millqvist and Gibson forced a good save but Slamiar was able make the next strike count as he found the back of the net again at 19.12 to end the period 3-0.

The second period was not quite as intense with Romford picking up a few penalties. The first one they killed off but with Krajicek in the box (and Ambler given a 10 min misconduct) Ron Shudra's slapshot hit the back of the net at 35.43 after a good pass from Slamiar for 4-0. It took Romford until 38.51 to get on the scoresheet, with Scott McKenzie shooting in high after plenty of pressure in the Scimitar's zone and on the net to go 4-1 into the third period.

With Bowie in the penalty box, Sporina picked up a rebound and scored a powerplay goal at 43.41 through a screen. Romford really upped their game after the second goal, attacking relentlessly as reflected by shots on goal, 18 to 6. Ex-Scimitar, Mark Stewart took the score to 4-3 at 59.31 after Ambler headed to the bench for an extra skater.

The Scimitars missed two empty net opportunities but Mackenzie didn't miss on his second chance from a rebound which he roofed with just 5 seconds on the clock, (assisted Stewart) for a 4-4 scoreline.

The game went to overtime, and with neither side scoring a golden goal, despite Romford picking up a 'too many men' penalty, a shootout followed. Mark Stewart scored the winning penalty shot to claim the two points for the team and 2+1 for himself, whilst the Scimitars only managed to force one save out of Ambler in a very disappointing end to the game. Paul Jones was MOM and faced 51 shots in 65 mins.

The Scimitars' 7th League position was confirmed after Romford beat Milton Keynes 5-3 the following night. However, the Scimitars will have to wait till next weekend to find out if their Play-off opponents will be Guildford or Milton Keynes.

Peterborough became League Champions and our congratulations go to them.

The Scimitars meet Guildford next Saturday at 7.30pm at iceSheffield, followed by Swindon on Sunday at 5.30pm.
