Match Report | 18th March 2009 » Sheffield Scimitars 3-6 Peterborough Phantoms

Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 8th March 2009

8.3.09

The Sheffield Scimitars finished their road trip of 4 away games down in Bracknell on Saturday before returning home to iceSheffield on Sunday against English Premier League's potential champions, Peterborough Phantoms.

The Scimitars took to the ice on Sunday in front of their biggest crowd this season, with an injury and illness-hit squad, but they managed to stay with the high-scoring Phantoms until half way through the 2nd period.

With Stuart Brittle and Simon Butterworth sidelined by injury, Ben Morgan and Paul Jones (but icing) with illness, and others either struggling or returning from injury or illness, Peterborough was not the team they wanted to meet at this time.

Home ice advantage looked good initially for the Scimitars as the Phantoms took a very early interference penalty at 0.20 mins. Joakim Millqvist took advantage of this with a run straight down centre ice between their defencemen and hit the roof of the net with a great backhander at 1.05.

End to end play during the first period though with many shots from both sides going high or wide. The Phantoms equalised through Joe Miller at 15.57 into the top corner. Miller was able to evade the Scimitars' defence again just before the end of the period to put the Phantoms 1-2 up at 19.08.

Zdenek Sikl equalised at 21.48 by sliding it under the goalie's pads after a nice pass from M. Haywood. Some good chances were set up by the Scimitars but without the finishing to match. Miller scored his hat trick at 27.40, hammering in a pass out from behind the net. A disputed goal was given at 28.58 when puck appeared to hit the post and come out without crossing the line but was given as a goal by Zeidins and another at 33.20 was lifted high under the bar from the face-off circle. Not the best period for the Scimitars who were outshot by 17-5 with Ben Bowns making some good saves after having stepped up to the mark well with Paul Jones ill and Mark Lee unavailable.

The final period saw both teams attacking in some free-flowing hockey and just the one goal for each team with the Phantoms last goal going in high again at 54.09 with Ollie Barron pulling one back late for the Scimitars at 58.10. Joakim Millqvist was awarded MOM and Robert Farmer was given Player of the Month and will be missed whilst he is away on GB U18 duty along with Ben Bowns and Tom Squires.
