Match Report | 6th March 2009 » Romford Raiders 7-5 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 5.15pm, Sunday 1st March 2009
1.3.09
The Sheffield Scimitars faced a double-header weekend away from home against Slough Jets and Romford Raiders and did well to come away from 2 difficult games with a point after 3 games on the road in 4 days.
Sunday's game was against the in-form Romford who have won their last 9 home games and it was the Scimitars' turn to be added to the growing list of scalps. They were still missing Steve Duncombe and Stephen Wall with Ryan Handisides added to the list. After a good showing the night before, the Scimitars were hopeful they could take some more points home.
Although Romford scored quickly on the 4th shot within 40 seconds in a pass across in front of net, the Scimitars gradually worked their way into the game and tied it at 9.21 with a lifted shot over the goalie by Joakim Millqvist. This was followed at 11.51 by Millqvist's second goal, assisted again by Peter Slamiar and Simon Butterworth. The Scimitars extended the lead to 3-1 with a great goal by Iain Bowie from an accurate pass across the net from Lloyd Gibson at 12.15. Romford thought they had scored shortly after but Jones had the puck in his glove, however they did score at 17.00 through Mark Stewart to make it 2-3 at the end of the first period.
All the lines worked hard and the Scimitars were looking good. Jones saved a penalty shot early in the second and Matt Haywood scored off Millqvist and Slamiar at 26.03. However a couple of quick strikes two minutes apart at 34.02 and 36.02 by Romford brought the score equal at 4-4 at the end of the second.
Two early goals at the start of the 2nd period brought about a change of goalie with Ben Bowns going in to replace Paul Jones who had a stomach bug. James Goodman then suffered an injury requiring him to be stretchered off before the game could resume. The Scimitars upped the challenge and were rewarded with a Slamiar goal at 50.53 to claw one back. The team worked hard to find the equalising goal but eventually ran out of time and luck as an empty-net goal was awarded with a final score of 7-5. Peter Slamiar was awarded MOM.
