Match Report | 6th March 2009 » Peterborough Phantoms 9-1 Sheffield Scimitars

Face Off: 8.00pm, Thursday 26th February 2009

26.2.09

After a great 4 point weekend and beating Guildford for the first time this season, Sheffield had to take on Peterborough Phantoms in a re-arranged mid-week away game and at a time when Peterborough were fighting to go back to the top of the league.

The Scimitars were unfortunately still short-benched, with four players on international duty in China, and also missing defenceman Steve Duncombe, with Matt Haywood, Tom Squires and Ben Bowns (N/M) brought up from the ENL team as cover.

The first period saw the Scimitars keep Peterborough at bay with only one goal conceded, scored by Gough at 5.48. Play was end to end but the Phantoms were quick to take possession and with some good passing. The Scimitars were unlucky on at least two occasions not to take the lead by missing an open net. The first period ended at 1-0 to Peterborough.

The second period was dominated by Peterborough, with an early screened goal by Hutchinson on the powerplay at 21.59. They then struck gold in a 5 minute span with 3 unanswered goals after which Ben Bowns went into net. The Phantoms added a sixth goal shorthanded at 34.24 and Wall denied the Scimitars an almost certain goal to end the period 6-0 up.

With the Phantoms In buoyant mood and a top of the League spot almost definitely on the cards, they scored another 3 goals in the third, though the Scimitars denied them the shut-out when Ron Shudra scored at 53.06. The Scimitars were unable to reproduce their great performance that overturned Guildford last Sunday against some potent forwards but Robert Farmer earned himself MOM for another hard-working performance.

The Scimitars are on the road this weekend for two very tough games, against Slough on Saturday and Romford on Sunday. They will be back home at iceSheffield the following Sunday, March 8th at 5.30pm in a return match against Peterborough when they will be determined to redress this result.
