Match Report | 18th March 2009 » Guildford Flames 4-2 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 6.00pm, Sunday 15th March 2009
15.3.09
The Copthorne Sheffield Scimitars had yet another double-headed road trip to test their depleted squad this weekend, but came away with a well-deserved two points from Swindon.
With injuries and illness still limiting the team's ability and energy to push higher up the table, the Scimitars also lost the services of the hard-working Robert Farmer who was away with the GB U18's in Estonia. The Scimitars extend their congratulations to him, plus Ben Bowns and Tom Squires who have also played at EPL level.
On Sunday, the Scimitars had an opportunity to take an early lead as Guildford took a penalty a minute into the game but they continually disrupted Sheffield's attempt to create scoring opportunities and even looked dangerous on short-handed breaks. Back at full strength, it was Guildford who took the lead when Miles, for Guildford, played a good pass forward from behind the net to Stuart Potts right in front, and who tapped it home at 4.24. A second goal was scored at 8.21 by Taras Foremsky giving Guildford a 2-0 lead to end the 1st period.
Joakim Millqvist got taken down by Zavoral and left the ice injured with 9.25 mins left on the clock but was able to return later in the game.
Looking the sharper of the two teams at the start of the second, Guildford took advantage and scored through a screen at 21.33. Thereafter the Scimitars picked up the pace and amount of possession, making Guildford work hard to stop Sheffield getting back in the game. A 4th goal off a Scimitars' defenceman stalled that momentum for a while and the period ended 4-0.
With Millqvist back in action he made no mistake at the start of the 3rd period and on a breakaway he blasted the puck into the back of the net at 41.55. This energised the Scimitars and Matt Haywood scored at 46.06 to give hope for a fightback, however, the Flames tightened up their defence and regained their focus which prevented Sheffield from reducing the deficit any further. The game ended 4-2 with MOM going to Ben Morgan for a sterling job.
