Match Report | 18th February 2009 » Sheffield Scimitars 7-0 Wightlink Raiders

Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 15th February 2009

The Copthorne Sheffield Scimitars completed their difficult weekend on a high by taking two points off one set of Raiders on the Sunday and with the Scimitars gaining a shut out this weekend. This was the second game when the Scimitars were missing 4 of their regular line-up who were away in China with the GB University squad, with Matt Haywood, Tom Squires and Richard Oliver drafted in from the ENL Scimitars as cover.

Sunday saw a much improved performance by the home team in front of much improved crowd. After having really upped the pace in the 3rd period the previous night, they carried on in the same way on Sunday and were rewarded with a quick goal at 0.46 into the game by Joakim Millqvist from Ron Shudra and Peter Slamiar.

Although the Scimitars put several good shots wide, they were able to put several accurate shots on Wightlink's goalie, Mike Brabon. Both teams were fairly even with action at both ends and the Raiders were dangerous on the break. With no penalties given or more goals scored, the first period passed quickly and ended 1-0.

The second period was not a good one for Wightlink as the Scimitars hit them for 5 unanswered goals with a great combination of one line accounting for 4 of them. Matt Haywood deked the goalie to score at 25.11, (assisted Farmer and Goodman), then Goodman finished at close range from a pass by Farmer and Haywood at 30.54. Farmer picked up a long pass from Haywood which he backhanded in behind Brabon at 34.01, followed by his second at 37.00 which he deflected in from a Haywood pass across the crease, assisted Goodman. The final goal of the period came from Wallace at 39.07 on the powerplay and assisted by Sikl and Shudra to go 6-0 up.

The Raiders had some good chances throughout the match but increased the pressure in the 3rd especially on the powerplay at 44.46 when Jones had to make a series of saves. Slamiar finally found the back of the net at 57.59 after saves had been made on several previous shots and the final scoreline of 7-0. James Goodman was given a well-deserved MOM for a great game and weekend performance.
