Match Report | 18th February 2009 » Sheffield Scimitars 2-3 Romford Raiders

Face Off: 7.30pm, Saturday 14th February 2009

On Saturday, the Scimitars had to face Romford Raiders, a team under a new coach, with a winning record of 8 out of their last 10 games under Jesse Hammill and moving up the table. After gaining no points against Peterborough the previous weekend, the Scimitars had to go into this game with four of their regular squad missing, Stuart Brittle, Oliver Barron, Lloyd Gibson and Lee Haywood, as they were in China playing for the GB University team.

Despite the Scimitars having some early shots on net, it was Romford who scored a couple of scrappy goals at 8.57 by Krajicek and 10.48 after a block by Morgan but with the puck being pulled out and lifted by McKenzie. The Scimitars passing and puck control was rather variable at times compared to the accuracy of Romford's.

A flukey goal early in the second by Romford at 21.35 came off a Scimitars skate as the puck was being passed across the crease to give Romford a 3-0 lead. The Scimitars picked up the pace a little but lost Bowie to a 10 minute illegal equipment penalty. Finally Ron Shudra put the Scimitars on the scoreboard at 32.38 with a powerplay goal, assisted by Sikl and Jonesand the period ended 3-1.

The Scimitars really started working hard in the third and managed to reduce the deficit to one with a great goal by Richard Oliver at 45.06, slotting the puck in past Ambler after Farmer had drawn him out of position. There were a few missed opportunities, especially one created by Oliver and with Farmer whipping in a low shot, which could have been the equaliser.

The increasing workrate by Sheffield resulted in Romford accumulating two penalties, a two minute for Krajicek and a 10 minute for Palik for unsportsmanlike behaviour on Wallace. Some great chances were created in the last frantic 5 minutes but the puck would not go in past Carl Ambler for the equaliser and Romford were able to bag another 2 points and give them their first ever win at iceSheffield. Robert Farmer was awarded MOM for his hard-working performance.
