Match Report | 18th February 2009 » Sheffield Scimitars 2-1 Peterborough Phantoms
Face Off: 7.30pm, Saturday 7th February 2009
On Saturday, in front of one of the best crowds of the season and for only their third meeting, both teams were intent on not letting the score run away as it had in their previous match in November.
The game therefore started more defensively though with some good strikes on target by both sides. The Scimitars moved the puck up well by all three lines with scoring chances created by Peter Slamiar, Joakim Millqvist and Robert Farmer. Zeidins and Peacock were the main threats for the Phantoms but all were denied to ensure the score remained 0-0 at the end of the 1st period. The first 20 minutes also passed penalty-free though James Morgan exchanged words with both Oliver Barron and Zdenek Sikl with the possibility there was more to come during the match.
The game picked up offensively in the second period with early shots on both goalies. The Phantoms claimed the first goal at 27.49 after an un-marked Craig Peacock picked up a rebound from a Brent Gough shot right in front of net. Simon Butterworth replied at 33.39, poking the puck in under Wall after assists by Peter Slamiar and Joakim Millqvist.
A couple of potential scoring chances were missed by the Scimitars when players were unable to connect with passes or Wall saved those shots on target. Both teams picked up a couple of minor penalties, with Millqvist unlucky to pick up a holding penalty jointly with a Phantom at 39.37 giving 4 on 4 play overlapping the period break.
Millqvist had a 2nd similar holding penalty on him with Morgan but all penalties killed off well. Both teams picked up the pace to break the 1-1 deadlock and Jones made a full stretch save from Peacock on a Scimitars penalty kill. With the game looking as though it was heading to overtime, unfortunately it was Peterborough who were able to score at 56.08 when Rempel flew in on the left wing, faked a shot before hitting the back of the net. A disappointing result for the Scimitars who finally saw their great home run ended. Simon Butterworth earned himself MOM for his game and the only Scimitars' goal.
