Match Report | 20th January 2009 » Sheffield Scimitars 7-3 Wightlink Raiders
Face Off: 7.30pm, Saturday 17th January 2009
The Sheffield Scimitars continued their excellent home run by adding a 6th consecutive win at iceSheffield when they faced two sets of Raiders this weekend, Wightlink Raiders at home on Saturday, before travelling to Romford Raiders on Sunday.
IceSheffield has become a much warmer place for the Scimitars since December when they began their current winning streak of 6 consecutive home games and 29 goals, bucking the early season poor home record.
With the Scimitars four GB U 20 Silver medallists returning to the line-up, the team was almost at full strength. The Scimitars started with energy and some good attacks on the opposition net. Both teams took early penalties but the Scimitars managed to survive a 5 on 3 penalty kill.
The Wightlink Raiders took the lead at 11.09 against the run of play with a shot from the point. Another quickly followed at 11.33 as Wightlink gained momentum and Petkoff sqeezed the puck in by the post in a melee round the net. The period ended with the Scimitars 0-2 down.
This changed early in the second as it was the Scimitars turn to capitalise on the momentum, scoring at 21.16 with a Shudra slapshot, followed within a minute at 22.21 from a backhander by Johnson which hit the goalie and rolled slowly in on the far post. Sheffield were passing and skating well with some close range saves being made allowing the Scimitars to go into the third period all square.
New signing Iain Bowie stretched the net at 40.34 and Slamiar then found a narrow gap by the post at 40.59 to make it 4-2 with a fifth at 42.55 by Sikl. Fast end to end play but with most of the good chances coming from Sheffield who outshot the visitors. Farmer scored the 6th at 52.19 which allowed Ben Bowns some ice timeas he replaced Jones in net. Slamiar found the back of the net with the final goal for the Scimitars at 58.13 and Wightlink scored a further consolation goal at 59.14 for a final 7-3 scoreline, with Ryan Johnson receiving MOM.
