Match Report | 3rd January 2009 » Sheffield Scimitars 4-3 Slough Jets
Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 28th December 2008
The Sheffield Scimitars were able to recover from a heavy defeat the previous night down at the Hangar and 2-0 down at the end of the first period at home, to lift two points on Sunday at iceSheffield.
In a scrappy and a lack-lustre first period, the Jets came out on top as they converted their chances into goals whereas the Scimitars created some shorthanded and even-handed chances but failed to score. Slough's first goal came at 16.16, after a string of saved shots on goal, scored by Ciccarello, and assisted by Moria who had run through 4 Scimitars' players before the pass.
The second goal followed shortly after at 18.30 as Ward was allowed time to fire the puck in high from in front of Jones, leaving the Scimitars to chase another 2 goal deficit at the end of the first period and looking unsettled.
The period team talk worked and the game began to pick up in the second with some early attacks on goal by both sides and an increase in physical play. A rare penalty call on both sides allowed 2 minutes of 4-on-4 after Slamiar and Phillips tangled at 25.17. Slamiar put the Scimitars on the board at 31.14 who was then in position for a rebound but the puck went straight in under Skinns. Slamiar's second and the equaliser was scored high over the top of the goalie after some great carrying into the zone by Millqvist before a pass to Shudra.
Nicky Chinn restored Slough's lead, 3-2, at 34.28 after evading the Scimitars' defence and cutting across in front of Jones unmolested. The period finished all square at 3-3 after Sikl tipped in a bullet from Matt Haywood. A much improved period by the Scimitars, who were playing with more passion had also stepped up on some body checks including Shudra with a hip check on Spearing and Slamiar who also rattled him into the boards.
Slough kept Jones busy in the 3rd period as the game picked up in pace and intensity with both sides going for the win. It was the Scimitars who scored the game winner at 52.12 as Milllqvist's slapshot went straight in under the goalie for a superb goal. Slough attacked and the Scimitars defended in the final eight minutes to hang on to the one goal lead, though the Jets very nearly forced overtime but for a great glove save from a slap shot on target at 59.58. Peter Slamiar was the Scimitars MOM and Nicky Chinn for Slough.
