Match Report | 7th January 2009 » Sheffield Scimitars 4-2 Swindon Wildcats
Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 4th January 2009
Sheffield Scimitars made the long journey down to the Isle of Wight on the back of three wins against the Raiders, before returning to take on Swindon Wildcats who had beaten the Scimitars in all three games played this season.
On Sunday the Scimitars were missing Wallace and Lee but had their new signing, Iain Bowie from the Edinburgh Capitals, icing in his first game with Sheffield.
Sheffield had a late face-off against Swindon because of broken plexi glass in the ENL Scimitars game prior to theirs but they started well by dominating play. Kudrna, who had been pulled the night before in Swindon's 10-0 defeat, settled himself in with some good saves in the first 4 minutes. Against the run of play, Swindon got themselves on the scoreboard with a goal by Aaron Nell at 5.07 put in on the back post after an initial save but several good scoring chances for the Scimitars failed to put the puck past Kudrna.
Waller decided to pick a fight with Slamiar at 10.18, with Slamiar winning the battle and both were given a 2+2 for their efforts plus an additional 2 mins on Waller for crosschecking. Sheffield outshot Swindon by 18 shots to 8 but ended the first period 0-1 down.
In the second period Sheffield lit the scoreboard with a PP goal to equalise at 24.08 after Davison was given a 2+10 for roughing and abuse. The Scimitars lost some of their dominance as Swindon increased the pressure. Millqvist and Slamiar combined well but were stifled by Swindon from getting shots off. Swindon went ahead again at 31.44 after a goal from a long pass from Brathewaite to Hayes. A great goal was scored by Millqvist at 39.10 with a shot across the face of the goal which went in off Kudrna's skate to tie the game at 2-2 at the end of the second period.
The Scimitars took the lead for the first time at 45.00 on the powerplay as Slamiar fired the puck into the back of the net off a rebound from a one-timer by Millqvist. The Wildcats piled on the pressure with Jones making some good saves to keep the lead but with the Scimitars unable to clear their zone. A Scimitars penalty at 54.33 increased that pressure but Swindon could not capitalise on the man-advantage and it was the Scimitars who added the insurance goal as Shudra scored at 59.06 for a 4-2 win. Lee Haywood was awarded MOM and the Scimitars moved up to 6th place in the League.
