Sheffield Scimitars 3 - 2 Milton Keynes after O/T and Penalty Shots
The Copthorne Sheffield Scimitars defied all opposition this weekend clinching 4 points with two excellent displays of hockey played in front of two big crowds. The Scimitars extended their home winning streak to eight in a row having not lost a home game since the middle of December.
The Scimitars started the weekend against Bracknell as they meant to continue it, in style, though with Sunday's game against Milton Keynes a little less fluid as the opposition was much stronger and contained the Scimitars high-flying forwards more.
Sheffield started briskly and Hollyhead made a great early save from a Slamiar one-timer and then successfully killed off a 'too many imports' minor penalty. The Scimitars bucked their usual trend of giving up early goals and, like the previous night, scored first at 11.06, when Joakim Millqvist deked two MK's defencemen and the goalie to slot home neatly. Following some concentrated Milton Keynes possession, Smulter managed to equalise with a power-play goal at 14.10 after the Scimitars were caught out driving forward short-handed. However they re-took the lead at 18.10 after Ron Shudra was able to poke the puck past the goalie off a rebound from a Millqvist shot during a melee in front of Hollyhead.
The 1st period ended 50 seconds early to clear blood from the ice as Ben Morgan received a bad facial cut after being taken into the boards, though with no penalty called. He returned to the ice in the second period after having several sutures inserted.
The Scimitars successfully killed off a roughing penalty at 19.46 after the re-start to end the 1st period and despite being outshot, the Scimitars led at 2-1. The Lightning had long spells of possession during the period even with having two penalties to kill off, but with no goals conceded to end the 2nd with Scimitars still 2-1 up.
The third period continued with end to end fast-paced hockey with the Scimitars maintaining their slender one goal lead after some excellent saves by both goalies. Milton Keynes finally managed to equalise at 55.48 after an unmarked Clarke knocked the puck in on the back post and they then re-doubled their efforts but without any result to send the game into overtime.
The Scimitars dominated possession during the 4-on-4 overtime but a penalty shoot-out was the only way to separate the teams. All was equal at 1-1 after the first 3 shots but Jones saved and Millqvist (MOM) scored on the next round giving the Scimitars a 3-2 win and a great 4-point weekend.
