Match Report | 13th January 2009 » Sheffield Scimitars 1-0 Telford Tigers
Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 11th January 2009
A maximum points weekend and 6th position in the EPL for the Scimitars in just the one home game on Sunday, against a free-scoring Telford Tigers of the previous night who had put 8 goals past 2nd placed Peterborough.
With the Scimitars aiming to extend their home winning streak to 5 consecutive games and contain two of the League's top points scorers, they knew they had to be sharp.
The Scimitars had Stephen Wallace back in the line-up but were missing the GB U20's players, Robert Farmer, Lloyd Gibson, new signing Iain Bowie and Ben Bowns (N/M) who were playing in Spain in the World Championships Div.II.
The one and only goal was scored 27 seconds into the game by the Scimitars after the puck was taken down the ice out the Scimitars' zone by Peter Slamiar and Joakim Millqvist, followed by an accurate pass from behind the net to Simon Butterworth, who one-timed it off the crossbar and in.
Play went to 4 on 4 after Ryan Handisides and Mackriel clashed and received 2+2 for roughing. Almost immediately on return to even strength Armstrong took Millqvist down into the boards so sending the Scimitars straight back onto the powerplay, but with no success leaving the score1-0 up.
Initially Telford came out a little stronger in the second period though the Scimitars killed off two penalties at 29.10 and 34.27 very well to allow Telford little quality scoring chance. Telford's Gareth Owen picked up a match penalty for charging on Butterworth right at the end of the second period giving the Scimitars a 5 minute powerplay to start the third period.
Instead of being able to capitalise on a powerplay advantage though, the Scimitars ended up killing off a 4 on 3 penalty as Sikl went for high sticks at 41.40 followed by a tripping call on Haywood at 42.10. Both teams picked up two more penalties each but neither Paul Jones nor Davey Lawrence were giving way on potential scoring chances in a very tight encounter. The Scimitars defended well to protect the single goal lead as the Tigers upped the shots on goal.
The game ended as it began at 27 seconds, 1-0, with Paul Jones receiving MOM award in a solid team performance and the Scimitars reinforcing their improved home form to go 5-0 up in recent home wins.
The Scimitars are back at iceSheffield next Saturday, 17th January v Wightlink Raiders, face-off 7.30pm before heading off to Romford on Sunday.
