Match Report | 7th December 2008 » Sheffield Scimitars 8-9 Peterborough Phantoms

Face Off: 7.30pm, Saturday 29th November 2008

Saturday's game was an exciting game in front of a record crowd and with a good atmosphere. Goals traded, one a piece, in the first 1.20 minutes set the tone for the rest of a very open and high scoring game, giving the fans of both sides plenty to cheer about.

Peterborough took a very early lead, 0.35 mins off the face-off as Buckman chipped a shot in high but Joakim Millqvist levelled quickly at 1.40 with a slapshot going between the goalie and the post. Peterborough went ahead again by Gough at 4.21 in a fast, end-to-end game. It took the Scimitars till 17.10 to tie the game via a great goal from Stephen Wallace hitting the centre of the net after deking two defencemen. The Scimitars then took the lead for the first time at 19.55 with Millqvist's second of the night, to go 2-1 up at the end of the period.

The crowd were entertained in the first period break by a group of ice dancers from iceSheffield's 'Christmas at the Movies' show on next week before the hockey action revved up again. The second period produced even more goals with Millquivst getting his second of the night from close in at 24.39. but just over a minute later Peacock pulled it back. Slamiar had an excellent shift as he stole the puck centre ice and forced it in low under Wall unassisted. Wallace chalked up an unlikely backhanded wrap-around at 33.32 as Sheffield increased their lead to 6-3 with Paul Jones pulling off some excellent saves from 23 shots before Peterborough scored 2 quick goals by Peacock and Miller. Slamiar, Millqvist and Wallace were on fire for the Scimitars, likewise Peacock, Zeidins and Gough for Peterborough. There were also a number of penalties in the second period as scuffles broke out between the players with tempers flaring. The period ended 6-5 to Sheffield.

The 5-goal 3rd period took the scores to 8-8 as the Scimitars were heavily outshot as the Phantoms broke out faster and. Zeidins clawed one back at 43.10 after being gifted the puck in front of goal by a Scimitar to send the game into overtime though a near certain game winner by Peterborough was saved just before full time. Four-on-four overtime resulted in stalemate. A penalty shootout followed which also had to go to sudden death and which Rempel scored to give Peterborough two points and Sheffield one. Millqvist was awarded MOM, with Farmer and Morgan chosen for Handley Brown and Supporters' Club Player of the Month awards respectively.
