Match Report | 18th December 2008 » Sheffield Scimitars 7-1 Wightlink Raiders
Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 14th December 2008
The Sheffield Scimitars enjoyed a festive weekend on home ice this weekend raising money for the Children's Hospital, having a decisive win and with six different scorers against the Wightlink Raiders on Sunday.
With the Scimitars wearing their special edition red shirts for their two home games, they faced Wightlink Raiders for the first time at home this season after a double-header win on the island last month. Both teams were under-strength, with Peter Slamiar and Stephen Wallace missing through injury for the Scimitars, and Mark Lee not icing for work reasons, though Steve Duncombe did return after leaving the game early on the Saturday.
The game started on a more positive note than the previous night with a goal at 1.24 by Joakim Millqvist, who slammed the puck under Brabon off a great pass out from behind the net by Robert Farmer. The Scimitars then had a man advantage during two consecutive powerplays and scored on the second with Ben Morgan making no mistake at 5.08 from an accurate pass by Sikl. The Scimitars finished the period with Robert Farmer sitting out a slashing penalty but 2-0 up.
After successfully finishing the penalty-kill at the start of the second, Ollie Barron clinched the Scimitars' third of the night at 21.26 after some pressure on net and he was able to lift it over the goalie. Simon Butterworth had a couple of shorthanded breakouts but no goals scored. A topshelf quick fire shot by Endicott took the score to 3-1 at 27.06. Farmer bagged the next after cutting straight in towards goal, deked the keeper and put the puck away at 34.04 for 4-1 end of second.
Two quick goals were scored by the Simitars early in the third, goal 5 at 44.57 by Sikl who hammered it in from Millqvist and then Butterworth from Millqvist at 45.35 into the top corner. Barron wrapped up the game at 53.32 with an easy goal after an initial shot by Brittle left the puck in front of the open side, and Barron picked up MOM award with two goals on a 7-1 win. A great shirt auction followed the game with proceeds from that and a shirt raffle and bucket collection going towards The Children's Hospital. Captain Blade put in an evening's appearance and entertained the children on behalf of the Copthorne Sheffield Scimitars title sponsors.
