Match Report | 7th December 2008 » Sheffield Scimitars 4-7 Guildford Flames
Face Off: 7.30pm, Saturday 15th November 2008
On Saturday Guildford made their first trip north after the first game in Guildford between the two sides had gone to a penalty shoot-out with the Scimitars at least gaining one point.
Ollie Barron and Simon Butterworth were both back in the line-up and with Matt Haywood, Tom Squires and Ben Bowns as back-up netminder also joining the team.
Both sides played hard with the Flames having the early chances before the Scimitars started creating some good scoring opportunities which were denied by Watkins. Guildford went 2-0 up near the end of the first, with a one-timer in front of net on their first powerplay by Liddiard at 15.43 followed two minutes later by a deflected goal by Zavoral. Matt Haywood pulled one back at 18.17, a neat finish in front of goal after a well-timed pass by Joakim Millqvist after Ben Morgan did well to stop the puck from leaving the zone.
Sikl scored the equaliser on a delayed penalty early into the second period but Guildford restored their lead at 23.45 from an angled shot. Both teams were fairly even in possession though Guildford was very quick on the break.
The Scimitars applied the pressure on Guildford's net during a powerplay but without a goal. Another equaliser came at 33.11 after Millqvist drew the netminder before passing to Slamiar, but this was short-lived and a 2 minute offensive strike with 3 goals gave Guildford an unassailable lead with their import line on fire. Dixon powered in a shot to join Butterworth who was deep in the net behind Jones at the time, 34.26. At 35.50 Melicherik scored as a 3 on 1 drove into the zone. James Goodman was down on the ice right in front of net after receiving a nasty facial cut at the time of the sixth goal and which necessitated the 2nd period to finish 36.19 for an early ice-cut to clear the blood.
One goal apiece in the third as a 3 on 1 offense but both sides kept the pace going though Scimitars' defence had trouble keeping the Flames forwards contained, and Smital was able to lift the puck into top of net at 42.13. Handisides was able to score a 4th for the Scimitars from a short pass by Millqvist with the final score being 4-7 and Matt Haywood awarded MOM.
