Match Report | 7th December 2008 » Romford Raiders 2-3 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 5.15pm, Sunday 30th November 2008
A hard-earned three point weekend for the Sheffield Scimitars with both games going into overtime and Saturday's going beyond into a penalty shootout. A record crowd with plenty of newcomers were treated to a goal fest of 8-9, overtime, a penalty shootout and a few handbags thrown in for good measure.
On Sunday down in Romford, the Scimitars were without Peter Slamiar who suffered an upper body injury in the third period on Saturday necessitating Ron Shudra to ice after missing 3 games due to injury and then Steve Duncombe was lost to the game after the first period, also with an upper body injury.
The Scimitars scored first at 3.11 after some good offensive play by Joakim Millqvist and Zedenek Sikl, followed by Ben Morgan scoring, assisted Butterworth and Millqvist. Action was fairly even and end to end with both keepers being kept busy. Romford equalised through Scott McKenzie at 10.11 in a 2-on-1 break out, with the period ending 1-1.
The Scimitars kept Ambler in Romford goal on his toes again in the second and Millqvist thought he had scored after the puck went in and straight out of the top of the nets but was not given. However, he did score on the powerplay after Mark Lee cleared the puck out of the zone in a great pass up to Morgan and Millqvist who buried it under the keeper at 37.20.
The action was reversed in the third as Romford put pressure on the Sheffield's goal with Lee resisting all attempts until 58.54 when ex-Scimitar Mark Stewart scored the equaliser to send the game into overtime. This time the game winner was scored by Robert Farmer ten seconds off the face-off at 60.10 allowing the Scimitars to claim two points and keep in touch with the three teams above them in the league. Mark Lee was awarded MOM for an excellent performance against his former team.
The Scimitars are on the road next weekend in Swindon and Guildford before returning for two home games the following weekend against Bracknell and Wightlink. See www.sheffieldscimitars.co.uk for more details.
