Match Report | 7th December 2008 » Peterborough Phantoms 2-3 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 16th November 2008
A mixed weekend of results for the Scimitars though two good games of hockey against the top two teams in the league.
On Sunday the Scimitars showed great spirit again in bouncing back after a defeat the night before and despite being behind for two periods, they worked hard and never gave up.
As always in the smaller rink at Peterborough, the pace was fast and this game got off to a brisk start with plenty of end to end play. There was some quick passing up the rink between Morgan and Gough to Peacock who found a gap on the far side to score at 13.57. The Scimitars created some confusion around the Phantoms' net a couple of times and Wall did well to keep the puck out. A fast and fairly evenly matched first period ended with just the one goal for Peterborough.
An early goal at the start of the 2nd period by Rempel gave the Phantoms a 2-0 lead. Ron Shudra sent in a rocket which just missed the goalie but ricocheted up out of the rink. There was some good defensive work by Sheffield and saves by Mark Lee though the third line and Robert Farmer caused the Phantoms defence some concern in runs into their zone and skirmishes around their net. It was Lloyd Gibson who gave the team the lift they needed at 33.25 after a series of penalties had been killed off by both sides. The Scimitars tried hard to equalise on the power play just before the end of the second period but it ended 2-1.
Peter Slamiar brought the teams level at 47.35 assisted by Joakim Millqvistat 47.35 and in a 30 second blip by the Phantoms, Robert Farmer scored at 48.02 after some creative work by Wallace and Sikl. The Scimitars battled to maintain this lead and with Peterborough racking up the pressure in the Scimitars' zone, the Scimitars suddenly found themselves having to kill off two minutes of 5-on-3 with both Sikl and Slamiar in the penalty box at 52.56.
Some excellent defending and some excellent saves by Lee during the penalty kill encouraged the Scimitars to withstand the final pressure from the opposition and finally to cause their own brief offensive threat. A well deserved win for the Scimitars who made another come-back in the third period, and Sikl was awarded the MOM.
