Match Report | 22nd December 2008 » Bracknell Bees 2-4 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 6.00pm, Sunday 21st December 2008
A great four point weekend for the Scimitars, which combined with other results around the league, means that the League table is still fairly tight.
On Sunday the Scimitars travelled down to Bracknell and in front of a good sized band of travelling support, the Scimitars were determined to reverse last week's home defeat. They had almost a full squad including the returning Slamiar and Wallace but with no back-up goalie and faced a depleted Bees team through injury and illness.
The Scimitars were soon on the offensive, and Peter Slamiar and Ron Shudra took advantage of a powerplay to test Annetts in Bracknell goal. Stephen Wallace worked hard to cut through the Bracknell defence, setting Sikl up with a couple of good chances.
Joachim Millqvist opened the scoring in favour of the visitors at 10.09 with a one timer from a cross by Slamiar, assisted Steve Duncombe. The Bees had a chance to equalise soon after when a shot by Joe Greener was trapped under the leg pad of Paul Jones after one-two passing with Matt Foord.
A slashing penalty against Ryan Handisides was successfully killed off by the Scimitars to take a 1-0 lead into the first break after a fast and fairly even period.
Another powerplay opportunity for the home side saw plenty of shots taken, but the defence players stood firm in blocking most, and Jones was more than equal to the rest, pulling off a series of increasingly acrobatic saves.
The Scimitars extended their lead at 36.52 with a backhander from Zdenek Sikl that Annetts managed to get a piece of, but couldn't stop from going into the net.
Jones denied the Bees on a two on one breakaway, making a save to force a face off to his right, but with a Bees player screening the net, a high shot from Danny House got through for the Bees opening goal at 38.35.
The Scimitars then pulled their lead back to two at 43.29 when Lee Haywood received the puck from Sikl just as the Scimitars import was hooked down, and Haywood skated for the goal to score as the puck slid under the netminder.
Penalties on Watt at 49.27 and on Farmer exactly a minute later made space on the ice for Bracknell to score a second, with Matt Foord racing in to tip in a cross from Bicknell on the back post at 51.11.
The final goal of the game for a 4-2 win came at 53.58, with Slamiar making a trademark run around the opposition players from deep inside his own zone, finishing with a rocket shot that whistled straight past a helpless Annetts. Joakim Millqvist was awarded MOM.
