Match Report | 2nd November 2008 » Wightlink Raiders 3-6 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 6.00pm, Saturday 25th October 2008
In Saturday's game the Scimitars came out storming with no hint of bus or ferry legs and dominated the first period in possession of the puck and shots on goal. Much of the fast-paced action was in the Raiders' zone with Toby Cooley getting warmed up early, facing a barrage of shots totalling 28 in the first period preventing any goals with some close-up saves off all the Scimitars' lines.
Inevitably the Raiders broke away on occasions and Coles scored at 5.05 with their first shot on goal after a good pass across the face of the net.The second goal by Rusic was disputed but given at 9.46 followed by the Raiders surviving a 3-on-5 penalty-kill giving them a 2-0 scoreline at the end of the first.
Keeping up the pace of the first period was going to be difficult for the Scimitars and the teams were more evenly matched in the second. Cooley continued to make some excellent saves but Jones was also saw much more action and the Raiders went 3-0 at 25.48 up after some scrappy play round Sheffield's net during which Long was able to get to a loose puck and flick it up over Jones.
A Raiders' penalty a minute later gave Zdenek Sikl the opportunity to score from an assist by Ollie Barron at 27.51 to slightly the reduce the deficit though Wightlink still looked dangerous when in the Scimitars' zone. The Scimitars retrieved another at 32.10 after a big pad save set the same line down the ice for Simon Butterworth to score from Barron and Sikl.
The tying goal came at 34.15 on another powerplay by Peter Slamiar, assisted Ben Morgan and Steve Wallace. An excellent period finished with Sheffield taking the lead for the first time at 38.51 after Wallace had dipsy-doodled the length of the rink to put it behind Cooley. The Scimitars were contained more in the second but were winning face-offs more consistently and taking no penalties.
The third period saw a reduced number of shots on Cooley but with the Scimitars battling hard in the corners to retain possession. A well-created goal at 45.43 came from Stuart Brittle who netted from in front after Robert Farmer had driven the puck in towards goal, assisted Goodman.
Shortly after both sides had successfully killed off a delay of game penalty Slamiar scored a great goal after a 2-on-1 rush down the ice, faking a pass to shoot and score at 48.19 assisted by Ben Morgan and Ron Shudra. The Raiders were getting increasingly frustrated and Scott decided to challenge Robert Farmer by dropping the gloves after some words were exchanged. Farmer managed to down Scott with the first punch and both went to the penalty box to cool off. The Scimitars then had to survive a late penalty to maintain their 6-3 scoreline and earn themselves two vital points, with Ollie Barron gaining the MOM award.
