Match Report | 1st October 2008 » Sheffield Scimitars 4-0 Telford Tigers
Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 28th September 2008
The Sheffield Scimitars got back on track with two good wins and maximum points this weekend. A hard-earned 2-3 win away in Milton Keynes on Saturday was followed by Sunday's 4-0 win at home against the Telford Tigers, with the Scimitars back at full strength.
Sunday's game against the Telford Tigers was not expected to be the same easy win as last year when the Scimitars only lost once out of 11 meetings. Despite the collapse of their main sponsor, Telford had retained some top players out of the new signings including Davey Lawrence and Jason Cassells.
The Scimitars were slow to get started again in the first period, allowing Telford too many chances initially as well as having to kill off a tripping penalty at 3.11. Mark Lee started in net for the first time in a Scimitars' shirt and prevented Telford from getting on the board with some good saves. Slamiar gave Sheffield the lead at 6.44 after a run down the ice before striking home, assisted by Sikl and Goodman. After some minor skirmishing and centre ice activity with the puck, the period ended 1-0.
A sharp team talk by coach Ron Shudra caused the team to respond by picking up the pace and domination, as demonstrated by the SOG differential of 5 to 17, with all lines getting their chances on net. Lawrence worked hard to prevent any further goals, though Sheffield also missed some easy sitters. Both teams played fast end to end hockey but with no reward and a 0-0 period.
All the Scimitars hard work paid off in the third as they pulled ahead courtesy of a goal at 41.25 after a fluid attack from behind the Sheffield goal line by Butterworth, ending with a little flick by Wallace from near the face-off circle. The third goal, and Wallace's second, came as he tapped in a loose puck at 45.33 off rebound from Warren Tait. The fourth and final goal was scored after Zgibor danced through 3 Telford players before setting up Sikl to knock it straight in.
Final score of 4-0 gave the Scimitars the double points for League and Cup and a boost after as they recovered some of last year's form. MOM went to Mark Lee for his well-earned shutout.
