Match Report | 23rd October 2008 » Sheffield Scimitars 3-5 Swindon Wildcats

Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 19th October 2008

The Scimitars were keyed up for a high-paced game against Peterborough on Saturday followed by a home game against Swindon on Sunday. However, when a blade broke on the zamboni whilst cutting the ice after the warm-up in Peterborough, gouging a deep cut area centre ice, the game had to be abandoned after attempts to repair the hole failed, necessitating a rearrangement of the fixture.

On Sunday the Scimitars faced the Swindon Wildcats who had beaten them in the very first Scimitars game of the season. Since that game, the Wildcats, under coach Pete Russell, have re-signed Joel Petkoff, a proven goal-scorer from the previous season as well as signing Ryan Aldridge, the ex-Basingstoke Bison Elite League coach.

The Scimitars again were slow off the mark in the first period, allowing the Wildcats to quieten the home fans with an early short-handed goal at 2.33 following a 2 on 1 chase down the ice, and a Wheaton shot rebounded to Richardson to slot home. Another short-handed breakaway shot was saved by Mark Lee with Kudrna doing the same on Lloyd Gibson.

A high sticking penalty on Ben Morgan gave the Scimitars a good opportunity to level the score, but Sheffield could not take advantage of a 5-on-3 PP as any shots on Kudrna were saved. On the other hand, Swindon increased their lead with another goal at 11.57 when Wheaton was able to fire in a rocket from the point.

Zdenek Sikl reduced the deficit after Wallace had created chances on net which finally resulted in the puck falling to Sikl off a Wallace rebound, netting it at 16.56, giving a 1-2 first period score.

Stuart Brittle scored the equaliser early in the second period at 20.36 on a 4 on 3 PP, after hoisting a loose puck from a rebound up over Kudrna. Some physical play initiated by Swindon and returned by Morgan and Handisides, was followed by Steve Duncombe squaring up to Watt after he tripped up Lee returning to his net. Both dropped the gloves and traded some punches with both getting 2+2 for their fight.

Plenty of action in the second period with the Scimitars play improving and resulting in 18 shots on Kudrna for just the one goal. Sikl netted his second goal of the night at 43.49 to give the Scimitars the lead for the first time, however the Scimitars could not hold on to that as Sitko fired in an angled shot at 44.36 to level the scores at 3-3.

Swindon went ahead again at 48.38 with Watt going high on Lee, further extending the lead at 51.53 by Richardson. Despite some good shots from the Scimitars, Kudrna stood firm for a 5-3 win and Stuart Brittle was awarded MOM for a hard working performance and a goal.

Ron Shudra said that the Scimitars did well to come back from 2-0 to take the lead at 3-2, but that he needed to see more goals from his high-end players after the Scimitars put 50 shots on the ex-Elite league goalie, Kudrna for 3 goals. Swindon had the breaks with 3 deflected goals but also created two breakaway goals to claim their win.

A disappointing result for the Scimitars after their heroics the weekend before. Next weekend they will be tested in an away double header on the Isle of Wight before they return to iceSheffield on the 2nd November v Bracknell at 5.30pm.
