Match Report | 1st October 2008 » Milton Keynes Lightning 2-3 Sheffield Scimitars

Face Off: 7.00pm, Saturday 27th September 2008

On Saturday, the Sheffield Scimitars travelled down to Milton Keynes more in hope than expectation given the Scimitars' poor track record last season with one win out of four, plus with the two losses last weekend in mind. The Scimitars were also missing Stephen Wallace.

However, the Scimitars came out with determination in the first period and after early shots on goal at both ends of rink, there was some concentrated cycling of the puck around MK's net between Stuart Brittle, Robert Farmer and Lloyd Gibson resulting in a goal at 2.36 scored by Farmer from a pass by Gibson. This was a line that worked hard all night, creating chances and battling for the puck. The Scimitars then lost their concentration a little and allowed MK back into the game. MK's first goal came at 13.43 after an awkward shot was saved by Jones off his shoulder but which dropped to the opposition who slotted it home. Their second goal was scored by Parez at 17.46 after some sustained MK pressure in the Scimitars' zone and was deflected in off a Scimitars' player. The period ended with Milton Keynes up by by a goal at 2-1.

The Scimitars did not come out as sharp at the start of the second allowing MK to camp in their zone for periods initially. Sheffield worked their way back into the game well as the period progressed. Several players had attempts on goal before Peter Slamiar found the back of the net at after some excellent passing from Sikle and Handisides. Offensive attack on goal was equal in the second and with no penalties called on either team by the end of a 1-0 period to the Scimitars.

The third period saw both teams trying to get the winning goal with pressure on both goalies and finally some penalties called. The Scimitars took advantage of their first powerplay with the game-winning goal by MOM Ben Morgan after some great passing shots by Slamiar, Sikle, and Handisides which allowed Morgan to slot home on the back post at 46.15. Milton Keynes upped the pressure to find the equaliser resulting in a shot differential of 8 to 24 on Jones, but with the Scimitars able to claim the much-needed win at the end of 60 minutes.
