Match Report | 15th October 2008 » Guildford Flames 3-2 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 6.00pm, Saturday 11th October 2008
3-2 OT & SO
An excellent couple of games for the Scimitars in a difficult road weekend when points can be difficult to come by but in which they gained three points out of four. They were missing Jon Woolhouse for the two games but Simon Butterworth was back in the line-up for the Sunday game.
Despite the previous weekend's results, the guys were in a good frame of mind. In a fast and tough game on Saturday in Guildford the Scimitars were able to claim a point after going to overtime and a penalty shoot-out. Guildford came off the blocks hard and it took Sheffield a little time to settle. A penalty for high sticks by the Flames 20 seconds into the game gave the Scimitars an early opportunity to take a lead but Guildford did not allow them to set up for any shots on goal, though Mark Lee was called into action instead.
Quick paced, end to end play with the Flames trying to be creative and the Scimitars trying to close them down and keep them out of centre ice. Sometimes Guildford were able to take their chances, forcing Mark Lee to make some good saves from close in. A lapse in concentration allowed Guildford to take the lead at 15.42 from a cross-ice pass by Foremsky to Liddiard on the far post, who lifted the puck into the back of the net and the period ended 1-0.
This score held during the second with the Scimitars matching the Flames more evenly but with both netminders keeping clean sheets despite an increased number of shots on goal and the Scimitars having about 4 scoring opportunities on breakaways which were either saved or prevented from reaching their target by the Guildford defence. The Scimitars dug deep though and it paid off late in third.
A 1-2 final period saw the Scimitars claim a late equaliser. Guildford scored at 42.24 by Rob Lamey to go 2-0 up. Wallace reduced the deficit when he put the Scimitars on the scoreboard at 52.10, after evading the defence from behind the net to bring it round in front to score, assisted by Ryan Handisides and Zdenek Sikl. assisted by Handisides and Sikl.
This was followed by a late great equaliser by Barron at 57.45 after an accurate pass from Slamiar, assisted Sikl, to take the game into overtime. Some intense play by the Scimitars around Watkins' net could not clinch a winner resulting in 4 on 4 overtime. This also failed to find to separate the teams with Lee under more pressure and a penalty shoot out ensued. Wallace, Slamiar & Tait all had shots saved, as did Foremsky but with Smital scoring the winning penalty shot.
Guildford claimed the 2 point and 3-2 win but the Scimitars also gained a point in this very competitive league and showed great character in coming back from a 2 goal deficit. Ron Shudra was awarded the MOM for a hard working performance and Watkins for the Flames. The team showed great character to come back from 2-0 down and worked hard for the full 65 minutes.
The Scimitars return home on Sunday to iceSheffield v Swindon Wildcats at 5.30pm.
