Match Report | 24th September 2008 » Swindon Wildcats 2-1 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 5.45pm, Saturday 20th September 2008
The Scimitars started the new season on the road in Swindon with new signing, Zdenek Silk, having just arrived in England, and with no challenge games under their belt due to a variety of circumstances.
The warm-up was not auspicious as Stephen Wallace broke a skate blade with no suitable replacements available, and then Mark Lee suffered an injury which also saw him leave the ice.
The team looked a little game-rusty in the first period, though they worked their way into the game. Peter Slamiar looked sharp with some good puck handling and attempts on net. In a period with few penalties, they held Swindon to 0-0 first period despite several accurate shots on goal by Swindon and some good saves on a 5 on 3 penalty kill.
Sheffield came out stronger in the 2nd period and applied some pressure back on Swindon. Some rough play by the Wildcats at times along the boards but with the Scimitars fighting hard in the corners before James Goodman stood up to Wheaton to protect Jones who was being pressured after making a save. This caused some skirmishing between a number of players, resulting in penalties for Goodman and Wheaton at 32.36 plus 10 minute misconducts for Braithwaite and Watt. During the ensuing 4 on 4 Slamiar collected the puck from the Scimitars blue line, carrying it down the ice before finding the back of the net to take the lead at 33.36, assisted by Steve Duncombe and Ben Morgan. Sheffield survived a long period of Swindon camped in their zone and managed to end the period 1-0 up.
A penalty on Slamiar in the 3rd gave Swindon some more opportunity attacking the net followed by Sheffield doing the same but both keepers withstood any shots. After shutting Swindon out for 53 minutes, it was disappointing for the Scimitars when Racek backhanded the puck into the net at 52.22 followed by a close range, delayed penalty goal hammered in at 53.41 by Watt.
The Scimitars improved markedly during the game with some good individual performances and developing as a team unit, despite a scoreline of 2-1 loss. Peter Slamiar received the MOM award for an excellent 1st game.
