Match Report | 24th September 2008 » Sheffield Scimitars 1-3 Slough Jets
Face Off: 1.00pm, Sunday 21st September 2008
The Sheffield Scimitars started the new season with a difficult weekend, away in Swindon on Saturday followed by an early 1pm start on Sunday for their opening home game. With no pre-season games to aid match-sharpness and with limited full squad training, it was always going to be a challenge. Stephen Wallace returned after missing Saturday's game, and Ben Bowns replaced the injured Mark Lee as back-up goalie.
Slough Jets, who were Play-off winners last year, and buoyed by a 6-3 win the previous night, took the game to Sheffield early in the first period with 2 goals in the first 3 minutes. The Scimitars were slow to react to Slough's initial dominance and got punished for it, firstly at 1.58 with a partially screened shot and then a 3 on 1 rush at 3.99 with a goal by Moria.
The Scimitars settled down and started creating their own offence though some of the passes were going astray. They were unable to reduce the 2 goal deficit during a 5-on-3 powerplay with no shots on goal but they did kill off a Scimitars' penalty which straddled the first period break.
Pressure by the Scimitars increased during the second period, especially around the Slough net. This resulted in a goal at 33.11 scored by Robert Farmer, from Lloyd Gibson and Stuart Brittle, for a 2-1 scoreline after sustained pressure around the net and Goodman playing hard too. The Scimitars created more chances in the second but not consistently on the net and could not finish on those that were on target.
Slough recovered their dominance a little more in the third as the Scimitars' passing was again suspect at times. They did create a number of chances, especially by Peter Slamiar, but Skinns blocked any on-target shots to end the game 1-3. MOM award went to Simon Butterworth for a hard-working performance.
