Match Report | 11th April 2008 » Sheffield Scimitars 9-0 Romford Raiders
Face Off: 7.15pm, Saturday 5th April 2008
5.4.08
On Saturday, Romford Raiders were in town for the Sheffield Scimitars final home game of the season. The game in Romford at the start of the Play-offs had degenerated into a penalty fest as had the Raiders' game against Guildford last Thursday. This was repeated on Saturday as Sheffield gained a shut-out against Romford with mounting penalties again in the third period, Sheffield with 22 penalty minutes to Romford's 205 minutes.
The Scimitars put 9 past the Raiders who ended the game in the final minutes with 7 players in the box and only the back-up netminder left on the bench for a line change. The main problems occurred in the 3rd, though the game had a bit of everything, a fight ( between Duncombe and Williams) and entertaining long break in play whilst all the penalties were sorted out, which featured the two netminders, Jones v Lee, who casually fired the puck from each end into the empty net, with Jones edging on goals scored, and some hockey.
The goals in the first period were scored by Simon Butterworth at 09.28, a SH one by Peter Slamiar from Moberg at 13.45 and the final one by Robert Farmer at 16.22. In the first period break, the U10's, League Champions this season, took part in a mini game and after the match they posed for a combined team photo with the Scimitars.
In the second period James Goodman opened the scoring at 22.30 with goal number 4 which went straight through the goalie from out near the blue line. Tom Squires netted the 5th at 23.07 and the 6th one was a PP goal for Butterworth at 31.00. Carl Ambler took himself off at that point and Mark Lee went into net.
Butterworth claimed his hat-trick on the PP at 42.37 after a great pass from Stuart Brittle to Butterworth on the back post to slot the puck in. Another good goal from Goodman at 54.01 from a pass by Slamiar took the score to 8-0 followed by a PP goal at 57.02 by Lee Haywood to complete the scoring at 9-0.
Simon Butterworth was awarded the MOM for his hat-trick and hard work.
Despite the length of the match, most fans stayed to watch to the end and were treated to the Scimitars own Dancing on Ice when Peter Slamiar and Ben Morgan entertained the crowd with a Peter Special with many of the team joining in the fun.
A presentation was made on ice to out-going coach, Neil Abel by Captain Ron Shudra, with thanks for all his successful time spent with the Scimitars.
Everyone enjoyed an entertaining evening with a difference despite the lack of intense hockey that everyone had watched during the play-offs. It rounded off another successful season and sent the team off to Coventry full of team spirit and some degree of confidence.
