Match Report | 2nd April 2008 » Sheffield Scimitars 3-2 Peterborough Phantoms

Face Off: 7.15pm, Saturday 29th March 2008

29.3.08

The Scimitars moved into the 2nd play-off weekend having won their first two opening games. This weekend saw a home and away double-header against Peterborough for the 12th and 13th time this season, and with Peterborough having the edge in head-to-head results.

The Scimitars were still without the GB 18's, who had just won the silver medal in Estonia, and were still playing with three imports only for yet another weekend. Peterborough needed a minimum of 2 points to keep their hopes alive for making it to Coventry and came out fast from the face-off, as did the Scimitars.

The Scimitars were able to pick up an early PP goal at 2.15 as Ron Shudra, on the back post, found the back of the net off an accurate cross from Stephen Wallace. Sheffield was the more dominant team in the first period though Paul Jones made a couple of exceptional saves to keep Peterborough off the scoreboard. Robert Dowd had a great solo effort in keeping the puck in the zone even from flat on the ice. Another fast, end-to-end game with the Scimitars passing the puck well and controlling possession even when playing 4-on-4. Buckman picked up a 2+10 for checking Lloyd Gibson to the head but no further scoring was added and the period ended 1-0.

Both netminders called into action early in the 2nd, Wall making a great double save and Jones stopping a shot with his face-mask. Gough finally got the Phantoms on the board with a SH goal at 25.48 after a clear breakaway alone on goal with Miller chasing in behind. Another breakaway shot on goal hit the top bar in the corner at 27.53 but bounced down in front of the goal line and was covered. The Phantoms were convinced they had scored but no goal given resulting in the temperature being raised on and off ice. The Scimitars scored again at 32.27, a PP goal by Moberg as the Phantoms piled up a few penalties and Miller then went for 10 mins misconduct. Peterborough then equalised at 39.42 by Rempel receiving a pass from Gough.

At 2-2, both teams had to work hard to gain the advantage with the Scimitars out-shooting Peterborough but unable to finish. The game looked as though it would go to overtime to break the deadlock but it was the Scimitars, through Robert Dowd, who finished it off in regulation time as he broke away and backhanded the puck in at 59.19. After a time out and pulling their netminder the Phantoms threw everything at the net in the remaining 1.21 seconds but to no avail and the Scimitars claimed the 2 points, with James Goodman earning himself the MOM award.
