Match Report | 2nd April 2008 » Peterborough Phantoms 2-3 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 5.50pm, Sunday 30th March 2008
30.3.08
The Sheffield Scimitars are the first team to clinch their semi-final slot at the Play-Off Finals in Coventry after they fought their way to another four point weekend over Peterborough, home and away. The Scimitars were still without the GB 18's, who had won the silver medal in Estonia.
Two tight and tough games, fast paced, end-to-end play-off hockey, especially in Peterborough when the Phantoms needed the win to keep their hopes alive of making it to Coventry.
Both teams came out fast and furious but the Scimitars claimed the first period with a 2-0 lead. James Goodman got the first strike after receiving the puck from Peter Slamiar at 16.24, whilst on the powerplay, and shot the puck straight in from the centre of the blue line. The second goal came two minutes later at 18.10 after Dowd collected the puck inside the zone and fired home over Wall's shoulder.
The second period continued in the same vein though Peterborough were outshot as they picked up six minutes of penalties. However, they also scored the only goal of the period after a scramble around the goalmouth with Rempel managing to finally get on the scoreboard at 29.27. Play was also becoming rather more feisty as the Phantoms became frustrated.
The Scimitars had more opportunities to put the game out of reach in the 3rd period as Peterborough received 34 minutes of penalties and had to kill of a couple of 5-on-3's. Robert Dowd scored his second goal at 56.28 on the PP, which increased the pressure on Peterborough in the last four minutes whilst both teams had a player in the box. They scored their second on a shorthanded break out at 57.57 with some good passing across the face of the net by Gough and Peacock. The Scimitars then had to kill a penalty until Morgan received a 2 minute penalty at 58.19 for roughing a Scimitar player after he had been hit in the face by an accidental short range clearance shot, requiring the Zamboni to clear some blood off the ice with 1.41 left on the clock. The Scimitars celebrated in style after their 3-2 win and a guaranteed place at Coventry. Paul Jones was awarded a well-deserved MOM as the team completed their 12th consecutive win.
