Match Report | 11th April 2008 » Guildford Flames 4-3 Sheffield Scimitars

Face Off: 6.00pm, Sunday 6th April 2008

6.4.08

The Sheffield Scimitars topped their Play-off group (A) on Sunday at Guildford and in doing so gained the advantage of the afternoon face-off against the 2nd placed team in Group B, Bracknell Bees, at Coventry next weekend.

This has been a great achievement for the Scimitars this year, especially considering they started the play-offs as underdogs. The only downside to the weekend was that Sheffield had their 13 game winning streak broken in the 4-3 loss against Guildford, who had to beat the Scimitars by 3 clear goals to top the Group. The Scimitars were missing Robert Dowd (Steelers) and Pasi Raitanen.

On Sunday, the first period was won by Guildford who came out fast and determined to claim those three goals. The Flames got off to a flying start, normally Sheffield's trademark, with a strike at 01.12 by Foremsky. Guildford again took advantage of Sheffield's sluggish start by going 2-0 up at 04.17 through Kohut. Guildford then hit penalty problems with Cross and Zavoral going to the box and handing Sheffield two minutes of 5-on-3 PP, during which Ron Shudra blasted an angled shot into the top of the net to cut the lead in half at 10.26. However, Guildford reclaimed the 2 goal lead when Bronnimann was well-placed to pick up a rebound from an initial good save to make it 3-1 at 12.44.

In the second period, the Scimitars had thrown off their bus legs and turned up the heat which the Flames could not handle. Sheffield reduced the deficit with a goal from Lloyd Gibson at 34.18 and then from Moberg just before the break at 39.03 to end the period equal at 3-3.

Guildford had to start again in the third but the Scimitars were flying by this stage. This was despite being knocked back by the loss of Peter Slamiar for the rest of the game following a boarding by Zavoral at 40.57 which was only punished by a 2 minute penalty. The Scimitars had to work hard in the third to create any offence, even during PP's, as Guildford defended well and it was Jones who was the busier netminder. Guildford scored the only goal in the final twenty minutes through Bronnimann, Foremsky, giving Guildford the win in their last home game. MOM for Sheffield went to Ron Shudra, who worked hard all night and triggered the Scimitars' fight back.
