Match Report | 27th March 2008 » Sheffield Scimitars 9-4 Wightlink Raiders
Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 16th March 2008
16.3.08
On Sunday, in part two of the double-header and still on pad 2, Sheffield dominated possession of the puck for large parts of the game, though the Raiders were still quick to break out from any Scimitars' loose passes or turnovers. The Scimitars' squad was also bolstered by the returning U18 players for this game.
An early goal by the Raiders was scored off a Scimitars' skate at 1.04, with Patrik Moberg replying at 12.21 after cutting across the face of the net and firing high. The Scimitars then chalked up five unanswered goals in the space of just over 3 minutes. Stewart Brittle made it 2-1 on his second attempt after an interception fell to Wallace at 13.01. Tom Squires made it 3-1 at 14.06 as he squeezed the puck in by the post and Moberg scored his second, a great goal at 14.23 fired into the back of the net from the centre of the zone. Wallace completed the scoring in the first, making it 5-1 at 15.46.
The second period was not as prolific for the Scimitars, getting on the scoreboard just twice, though the Raiders also claimed two more. Raiders struck at 23.58 after Rusic broke away on a Scimitars' line change during a powerplay. Moberg scored his hat trick, lifting the puck into the top corner at 24.33 unassisted, and again at 33.51 with an IOW marker in between off a Scimitars' deflection. Ben Bowns swapped with Jones, coming in towards the end of the second with the score at 7-3.
The third period was more of the same with Rusic claiming his hat trick and two further Scimitars' goal scored by Simon Butterworth at 52.24 after receiving a pass on one post to slot into a wide open goal. James Goodman collected a loose puck near the blue and raced in firing a rocket at 57.28 to round off a 9-4 scoreline. Patrik Moberg was awarded MOM for a 4 goal haul.
The Scimitars completed their 3rd regular EPL season with a 4 point weekend and on an eight game winning streak to head into the Play-offs in Group A. This group is comprised of Guildford, Peterborough and Romford and the campaign starts on the 22nd March.
