Match Report | 27th March 2008 » Sheffield Scimitars 5-3 Guildford Flames

Face Off: 6.00pm, Sunday 23rd March 2008

23.3.08

Two cracking, high scoring games and four points for the Scimitars in their first weekend of Play-off hockey.

On Sunday, the Scimitars faced League Champions, Guildford Flames, after a tough away game in Romford on Saturday night. Robert Dowd and Steve Duncombe made a welcome return to the team, though Sheffield still missed their 4th import and key player, Pasi Raitanen, along with their usual four GB U18 juniors who were in Estonia. Guildford were at full strength with an enviable choice to make out of their 5 imports.

An excellent end to end first period of hockey by both teams with the Scimitars being the first to get on the scoreboard with a goal by Ollie Barron on his third attempt at 16.15. A great shorthanded goal from Peter Slamiar bounced off Watkin's pads and into the top of the net at 18.48 off a perfect cross by Patrik Moberg. Zavoral quitened the cheering with a quick reply at 19.07 from a shot straight in front of the crease.

The Flames' frustration at not being able to score began to draw a number of penalties although the Scimitars also had some interesting calls too. Sheffield increased their lead to 3-1 courtesy of a SH goal at 24.22 by Simon Butterworth who scored on the back post, assisted by Stephen Wallace. Butterworth was then elbowed in the head by Savage who was given 2+10 penalty. Shudra was given sent to the box for two mins interference when Zavoral fell over two feet away. They completed their 2-0 period with a 5-on-3 PP goal by Ben Morgan at 32.35 shortly after another goal had been washed out.

The third period started with the Scimitars 4-1 up but the Flames knocked this down by one with an early SH goal at 40.55 by Smital. The quality of hockey was spoilt in this period by the number of penalties given to both sides as they clashed striving for the win and Guildford's frustration was given vent, with Jones the busier netminder. Zavoral picked up a 2+10 for checking from behind on Barron, with the fifth and final goal for the Scimitars resulting on the PP seeming to seal the win at 56.53 but a 5 on 3 powerplay for the Flames brought them back to 5-3 at 58.20. Plenty of action in the final minute of the game but to no avail and the Scimitars claimed their 2nd victory of the weekend with their opposition picking up plenty of penalty minutes. Ben Morgan was awarded a well-deserved MOM.

Another excellent team performance rounded off the best possible start for the Scimitars in their bid for a 3rd consecutive spot at the Coventry Finals weekend, though there are still four more tough matches to play before then.
