Match Report | 21st March 2008 » Sheffield Scimitars 5-2 Wightlink Raiders
Face Off: 7.15pm, Saturday 15th March 2008
Sheffield Scimitars v Wightlink Raiders 5-2 W 15.3.08
The Sheffield Scimitars welcomed the Wightlink Raiders for their first and last visit to Sheffield this season, but had to play both games on Pad 2 due to a judo competition on their home pad. The Scimitars were still missing Pasi Raitanen and Steve Duncombe due to injury, Robert Dowd had recovered but joined the Steelers at the Arena for the weekend. The U18's were playing for their own team on Saturday.
The game was initially fairly tight with a 0-0 first period despite the Scimitars putting 24 shots on Toby Cooley. Peter Slamiar broke the deadlock at 20.15, whipping the puck in after cutting across the net, with Steve Wallace firing in from in front of net at 22.11. Franc pulled one back at 25.52 on a one-on-one screened shot. Slamiar squeezed the puck between blocker and post for the third at 34.16 after two chances by Shudra and Slamiar had hit the post. Patrick Moberg scored a great goal at 38.15 after receiving the puck from Ollie Barron right in front of net and drawing out the goalie three times before firing it home for a 4-1 lead. The end of the period saw the Raiders swarming round Jones in net, who made a save flat out on the ice with the buzzer preventing any further scoring chances.
The Raiders scored their second at 46.04 after some passing across the net face but Farmer redressed that by scoring the 5th and final goal at 46.42. The Raiders stepped the pressure up more in the second half of the third period and Simon Butterworth was sent into the boards by Watt after Jones came out to play the puck with both Scimitars taking some knocks. The Raiders always looked dangerous on the break especially near the end with some good saves needed and ending in a further pile-up in net. In a game when the Raiders were playing out the season it was not the greatest game to watch with the Scimitars not playing to their usual standard either. Ollie Barron's hard-working performance earned him the Scimitars' MOM, and Toby Cooley earned his after facing 61 shots.
