Match Report | 14th March 2008 » Sheffield Scimitars 5-1 Swindon Wildcats

Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 24th February 2008

24.2.08

The Sheffield Scimitars got back to winning ways with a much needed and confidence-boosting four point weekend.

Both teams had also come off good wins the night before, though Sheffield had been hit by yet more injuries in the Saturday game, with Robert Dowd and Stuart Brittle added to Pasi Raitanen and Jon Woolhouse with Steve Duncombe joining them during the game.

The Scimitars played well in the 1st period with plenty of time in the offensive zone and some good shots on goal saved by Craze. An excellent short handed scoring chance for a fast skating Wheaton for the Wildcats at the other end was denied by a Jones glove-save.

The junior players worked hard all night with plenty of pace, creating chances and looking confident. Good team work and passing was rewarded when Ryan Handisides, on a line with Slamiar and Moberg, retained possession of the puck well behind the net before a perfect pass out to Slamiar, who finished neatly at 15.22 for a 1-0 lead.

The Scimitars claimed an early goal in the 2nd period at 21.50, scored by Butterworth on a rebound after Wallace had driven it in on net. Swindon picked up the pace with intent and at times the Scimitars seemed to have difficulty in clearing their zone as Swindon fired in several accurate shots, some at close range but all were saved.

Sheffield then claimed their 3rd at 29.01, another well-worked goal, after Handisides had stripped the puck off a Wildcat, sped down the ice before providing Slamiar with another great pass for him to drive the puck home. Swindon reduced the deficit by one when Petkoff out-skated most of the Scimitars with time to bury the puck. Slamiar scored his hat trick goal at 39.19 after he stole it from the goalie after a wrap-around attempt by Moberg, with the Scimitars finishing the second period 4-1 up.

A hooking penalty on Janak, who was trying to prevent Handisides from getting another run on goal provided the Scimitars with another powerplay opportunity. This they took with the 5th and final goal being scored by Ben Morgan with a shot from the right wing which managed to squeeze between the goalie and the post. A fast-paced game by both sides right to the end, with some excellent performances especially by the junior players, and in particular Ryan Handisides, who gained a 2nd consecutive well-deserved MOM award. A great team effort for the Scimitars 3rd consecutive win.
