1st Leg of EP Knockout Cup semi-final
Sheffield Scimitars faced Peterborough Phantoms on Tuesday evening in the first leg of the Knockout Cup Semi-final. With key players still missing from injury or delayed through traffic problems, the Scimitars started with a disadvantage.
Peterborough came out fast and strong and dominated the first ten minutes with Sheffield slowly working their way into the game. Peacock, for the Phantoms, scored the first goal at 8.20 on a tip in from a screened shot. Sheffield could not capitalise on their powerplay and then had to defend a 5-on-3 Peterborough powerplay towards the end of the first period. Play was becoming a little feisty between Ryan Handisides and the Phantoms' Morgan, with them both picking up penalties.
The second period saw Sheffield the stronger of the two teams after some initial early shots on Sheffield's goal. Robert Farmer put the Scimitars on the scoreboard at 23.54 after a melee around the net. This triggered some minor scuffles between the players, but with no penalties called. Handisides was again getting under Morgan's skin through hassling for the puck, with subsequent penalties, though Morgan got thrown out of the game for a retaliatory butt-ending call at 26.11. The Scimitars took the lead at 35.19, a well-worked shorthanded goal by Ron Shudra from an accurate Moberg pass, after Slamiar had deflected the puck out of the Scimitars' zone. A 2-0 period to the Scimitars.
With Peterbrough pressing for an equaliser, it was the Scimitars' turn to pick up the penalties. Handisides'slashing penalty was followed by Peterborough scoring a delayed-penalty goal at 53.16 whilst 6-on-4 as Wallace collected a hooking minor plus a 10 minute misconduct. Sheffield hit back again on the powerplay after some great play on the boards and behind the net by Shudra, before he passed the puck out to Slamiar who buried it for a 3-2 lead.
Unfortunately Brittle got called for a harsh 5+game boarding penalty as the two slid into the boards after chasing for the puck 3.45 mins before the end of the game. This turned the tide as Peterborough stepped up the pressure on Sheffield's tired legs and they sealed the game with two identical tipped-in powerplay goals from close in on net. Ron Shudra picked up a hard earned and well-deserved MOM award. Peterborough now carry a 1 goal lead into their home leg while Sheffield will hope they have some injured players back soon.
