Match Report | 14th March 2008 » Sheffield Scimitars 3-2 Bracknell Bees
Face Off: 7.15pm, Saturday 1st March 2008
1.3.08
The Scimitars faced Bracknell Bees and Telford Tigers in a home double-header this weekend, with plenty still to play for by all three teams.
Saturday's game was expected to be a tough encounter following the Scimitars win against the Bees in their home barn recently, and with three key Sheffield players still out through injury, Pasi Raitanen, Steve Duncombe and Robert Dowd.
The Scimitars looked the slightly stronger team in the first two periods despite being outshot, with some excellent passing and possession. Another early goal on Rockman gave the home team a lift as Peter Slamiar was in place to pick up a loose puck off a Patrik Moberg shot on goal and put it in on the near side to go 1-0 at 0.18. Ron Shudra made a diving stop on a possible pass across the net on a 2 on 1 drive by the Bees and there were some good saves to keep the score 1-0 at the end of the first.
The Scimitars got on the scoreboard again early in the second period, with a great pass from the centre by Slamiar to Shudra who scored from an angled shot at 22.33, despite Bracknell having started the period with short-handed shots on goal as their penalty played down. Slamiar got his 2nd of the night on a rebound at 25.58 after attempts by Ben Morgan were stopped. Another good chance by Steve Wallace on a solo run up centre ice which ricocheted in off the corner post. A great save by Jones near the end of the period allowed the home team to stay 3-0 up at the end of the 2nd period.
Bracknell changed their style of play for the 3rd, becoming much more physical. Their domination of play increased as the period progressed and they were at last rewarded at 51.51 with their first, a well-worked goal by Watt scoring close in after some good passing around the net. Bracknell continued to camp out in the Scimitars' zone for long stretches, with the Scimitars having little opportunity for any offensive play. The Bees pulled their goalie in the last minute and Watt scored again on a 6-on-5 with 13 seconds left, and they continued to pile on the pressure to equalise but the Scimitars withstood it to gain a well-deserved and hard earned 2 points in a tight game. Ron Shudra picked up a 2nd consecutive MOM award for another excellent and hard-working performance, whilst wearing his IIHF special shirt which is being auctioned over the weekend.
