Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 2nd March 2008

Sheffield Scimitars v Telford Tigers 10-3 win 2.3.08

Sunday saw the short-benched Telford Tigers roll into town for the 10th and final encounter this season, while the Scimitars were still without Pasi Raitanen, Paul Jones, Robert Dowd and Steve Duncombe, with Ben Bowns starting in net.

Peter Slamiar put the Scimitars on the scoreboard early yet again, this time at 50 seconds as he cut across goal and lifted it over the keeper's pads. Steve Wallace worked hard all over the ice with some superb stick work to outsmart the Tigers' defence. The Scimitars took advantage of one of the few penalties in the game to score the 2nd at 5.22 after Ben Morgan connected with a great pass out from behind the net by Patrik Moberg, slamming it home top shelf. Telford were still quick on the break but shots were not often on target. Some more offensive attacking by Simon Butterworth and Wallace set up Ollie Barron to put the puck through the keeper's legs for the 3rd goal at 13.12, with 4th unanswered goal at 19.05 by Tom Squires from Robert Farmer and Matt Haywood.

Scimitars started the 2nd period in the same fashion, with Lloyd Gibson finding the back of the net at 23.45 assisted by Jon Woolhouse and Stuart Brittle, followed at 27.47 by a well deserved goal from Wallace, assisted Butterworth & Barron, which rattled in off the inside of the post and this 6th goal prompted Telford to change netminders, putting Heslop in. The teams then traded goals with Telford pulling one back at 33.44 by Stanton after a two on one drive into the zone. Wallace replied at 34.03 from a Shudra pass and Jon Woolhouse was next up at 37.01, followed by Hornak getting their 2nd marker at 38.11, leaving the score 8-2 at the end of 2nd period.

The Scimitars continued to pepper the goalie, with Patrik Moberg scoring a well-worked goal at 48.12 after his other earlier shots were saved, and again at 59.30, both assisted by Ryan Handisides and Peter Slamiar. Hornak scored their 3rd at 51.30 for a final 10-3 win and Steve Wallace was awarded MOM.

Another morale-boosting four point weekend for the team heading towards the play-offs, though with two tough games against the on-form Peterborough Phantoms on Thursday (KO Cup semi-final) and Saturday before the final weekend against the IOW Raiders.
