Peterborough Phantoms v Sheffield Scimitars 3-4 Win 8.3.08

Sheffield Scimitars returned to face Peterborough for a second time in as many days, following their rather controversial defeat in OT to put them out of the Knockout Cup on Thursday.

It was a repeat of Thursday's game in intensity, speed and passion and another great hockey match to watch. Both sides were missing players, though the Scimitars were down by more. Steve Duncombe and Robert Dowd were still out through injury, and the four regular juniors joined their U18's team in its quest for the League title.

Although the Scimitars looked marginally the stronger, especially in the first ten minutes as they tested the goalie, Stephen Wall several times, the home team gained the upper hand during that period with two well taken goals. The first was scored at 11.34 after the puck was picked up by Gough during a clearance and passed across to Buckman who slammed it home. The second came shortly after at 12.52 with a similar goal this time Gough, assisted Buckman.

However, Ben Morgan pulled one back after he deflected the puck in at 16.27 after some good play between Peter Slamiar and Patrick Moberg on the powerplay to end the period 2-1 down.

Peterborough increased their lead to 3-1 at 33.44, a powerplay goal by Buckman, but Simon Butterworth one-timed a pass to take the score to 3-2, assisted Steve Wallace and Stuart Brittle at 35.40. Ben Morgan took a puck in the mouth shortly after but did not miss many shifts while he was patched up. Although action was still fast-paced, the Phantoms were able to pin the Scimitars in their zone at times in the second with the defence working well, combined with Wallace having a couple of good short-handed breakaway runs up the ice. The Phantoms had another great scoring chance on a breakaway by Miller near the end of the second, but was denied by Jones.

The Scimitars increased the tempo in the third, and were rewarded at 47.14 with an equalising goal by Robert Farmer after Wall had been under some pressure. The pace and physical play by both teams mounted in the last ten minutes with some close range saves by Jones to keep the score level.

With the clock counting down Moberg picked up the puck on the blue line and skated in alone on Wall to hit the back of the net with one second remaining on the clock, resulting in some exuberant team celebrations on much deserved 4-3 regulation win. Patrik Moberg, who has been playing very well recently, picked up a well deserved MOM award, not least for his perfectly timed winning goal.

The Scimitars currently lie in 5th place in the league and are playing with confidence and great team spirit going into the final weekend of the regular season.

Next weekend they take on the Wightlink Raiders in a home double-header at iceSheffield, Saturday 15th March, face-off is at 7.15pm and Sunday 16th March at 5.30pm, after which the play-off groupings will have been determined.
