Match Report | 13th March 2008 » Bracknell Bees 1-4 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 6.00pm, Saturday 23rd February 2008
23.2.08
The Scimitars travelled down the Hive for their second visit of the season in the hope that the near win of last time could become their first over the Bees this year, though Bracknell were coming in fresh off winning the EPL Cup against Slough. Still missing Pasi Raitanen and Jon Woolhouse, but with the four juniors again on loan to us to bolster to the squad.
The Scimitars, having successfully killed off an early penalty, then got lucky with an early PP goal at 7.02, after Rockman had come out of net to play the puck and Steve Wallace quickly picked it up behind net and slotted it in before the goalie could re-set. With penalties the order of the day in the first, there seemed little 5-on-5 play and the Scimitars then lost Ben Morgan for a 2+10 checking penalty at 12.40. Sheffield were stronger for the first 20 mins. creating more scoring chances especially with a bullet from Slamiar that hit the crossbar. Stuart Brittle then got checked behind their goal at 15.39 and did not return to the game. At 16.49, Robert Dowd went in after the puck on the boards and was cross-checked from behind by Baird, who was ejected from the game on a match penalty. Dowd eventually was taken off the ice and also did not return. The Scimitars scored on the resulting powerplay, targeted by Ron Shudra at 16.52, assisted Moberg and Slamiar.
The second period started with 1.15 left on the Bees major penalty and 6 mins of Morgan's 10 mins. The Bees came out more determined in the second and also stayed out of the penalty box. Some excellent play and stick work early on by Wallace and Moberg to retain possession of the puck but the Scimitars then had to kill of a 5-on-3 penalty, though with a short-handed charge down on their net by Wallace. On Bracknell's only penalty in the 2nd , Sheffield scored their 3rd goal with Robert Farmer deflecting a shot coming in from the point by Goodman, assisted Butterworth. Some great saves by Jones kept the score at 3-0 at the end of the second period.
With pressure in both zones play went end to end, though the Scimitars scored on another delayed penalty at 45.05 after a great pass across by Squires to Moberg, who made no mistake to make it 4-0. This increased Bracknell's determination to at least get on the scoreboard and pressured the Scimitars constantly, giving them the chance on a delayed penalty to score a consolation goal at 49.22. Sheffield then battled hard to keep hold of the 3 goal advantage, defending as well as driving forward at times and with Ryan Handisides earning a well-deserved MOM award. A very good and much needed win for the Scimitars, though unfortunately costly in terms of injuries yet again. They have to do it all again tonight against Swindon, who are on their heels for the 6th play-off spot.
