Match Report | 20th February 2008 » Telford Tigers 1-6 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 17th February 2008
The Scimitars gained a much-needed 2 points in a penalty strewn game against the Telford Tigers on Sunday, after a gutting loss with just 21 seconds left on the clock against Peterborough on Saturday.
As the Scimitars faced off against Telford for the ninth (of ten) meetings this season, the tone for the match was set in the first 36 seconds as Captain Ron Shudra was put in the box for a 10 minute misconduct for taking exception to Armstrong nasty cross-checking from behind on Simon Butterworth. Further incidents by Telford were not penalised early enough and a very feisty game ensued.
Sheffield were first on the board with a PP goal at 1.14 scored by Barron, from Brittle. Play went end to end though Jones was the busier of the two goalies as turnovers occurred for both sides. With Telford spoiling for a fight, Robert Farmer and Williams had a brief skirmish and sat 2 minutes for their efforts, followed by Brittle stealing the puck cleanly off a Telford player inside their zone, forcing a good save. This resulted in another skirmish around the Telford net with a break in play needed to sort out the penalties. A tight first period ended with Sheffield 1-0.
The Scimitars did not look quite as hungry in the second, (despite the end of period scoreline), and Dumas equalised at 22.56 after some good passing close into the net. Shudra fired in a hard shot from the blue line and Butterworth was on hand to put away the rebound at 31.16, which turned out to be the game-winning goal. Much battling for the puck and centre ice activity was followed by a lovely goal from Wallace as he flicked the puck into the top of the net at 35.00. Haywood made it 4-1 at 37.34 after he received a great pass forward from behind the net by Barron.
Robert Dowd put the Scimitars 5-1 when he ripped a brilliant shot into the top of the net at 44.06. The third period saw plenty of penalties handed out as Telford became intent on roughing up as they couldn't score. Tonks was ejected from the game after checking from behind and his second 10 min. misconduct, which was part a total of 9 misconducts handed out during the game. Bowns was given some share in the action for the last half of the third period. Barron took delight in scoring the 6th and final goal on the powerplay after refusing to be drawn into a fight with Stanton, and pint-sized Ryan Handisides upset Kostolny into taking a 2 (for slashing) +10 after Handisides had checked Kolstolny hard into the boards. A much- win for the Scimitars and a well-deserved MOM for Oliver Barron for another hard-working game.
