Match Report | 20th February 2008 » Sheffield Scimitars 5-6 Peterborough Phantoms
Face Off: 7.15pm, Saturday 16th February 2008
Saturday's game was against the ever-improving Peterborough Phantoms, who are now on a 7 game winning streak, and with honours fairly even between the two teams. The Scimitars were still missing Pasi Raitanen, plus Tom Squires, Matt Haywood and Ryan Handisides due to ENL duties, but with Jonathon Tindall as back-up netminder.
Sheffield scored first at 6.14 after Wall made a good save off Woolhouse but Brittle found the loose puck and slotted home. Shudra made a great diving save to prevent a cross-ice pass in front of goal but Peterborough retained control of the puck scored on another pass in front of net by Zeidins to Rempel at 11.28. Several Scimitars' passes were going astray and Jones made a great initial close-up save on Rempel's 1-on-1 but the rebound was picked up by Zeidins to go 1-2 at 18.47.
Peterborough went ahead further at 22.04 after a rebound came off a Buckman shot, landing for Gough to put away. After that the Scimitars increased their tempo and played some excellent hockey which Peterborough could not match. Four unanswered goals in the second gave Sheffield a 2 goal cushion by the end of the period. Dowd scored the first after flying down the rink, laying the puck back for Butterworth to pass to Wallace, who passed back to Dowd to go high at 26.22.
A second great (5-on-3 PP) goal by Dowd, who went down centre ice from a Shudra pass, to shoot straight through Wall at 28.08 to equalise 3-3. Wallace made it 4-3 from a Dowd pass at 30.42 after both broke away short-handed. A hat-trick goal on the PP by Dowd at 33.54 was put away off a great pass from behind the net by Butterworth.
Having fought back from going 1-2 down in the first, to leading 5-3, they then blew it in the third as it was Peterborough's turn to increase the pressure. They pulled one back at 43.22 after some messy play around net. While Phantoms restricted Sheffield's chances to increase their score, Peterborough pushed forward putting many shots on goal. The equaliser came at 56.24 with Peterborough continuing to press hard for the winner, which came as Rempel and Hutchinson went in 2-on-0 to put the game winner in the net with just 21 seconds left on the clock. A gutting loss for the Scimitars to let slip a 2 goal lead after an excellent 2nd period. Dowd got MOM for his hat trick of excellent goals.
With other teams below picking up points on both days this weekend, the Scimitars can not afford to lose many more games and get sucked into a battle for the final play-off position. They currently lie 6th and seven points clear of Swindon, who the Scimitars take on at ice Sheffield next Sunday at 5.30pm.
