Match Report | 20th February 2008 » Guildford Flames 5-1 Sheffield Scimitars

Face Off: 6.00pm, Sunday 10th February 2008

10.2.08

The Scimitars travelled the shorter distance from Romford to Guildford on Sunday with Steve Duncombe, Pasi Raitanen and Steve Wallace not icing, but with Lloyd Gibson back after leaving the game early on Saturday, with Matt Haywood, Ryan Handisides and Ben Bowns also playing. A great band of travelling support was also there for the second night.

With Guildford fresh with no games the previous night, they came out fast in the first and Bowns, who was given his first start in goal for the Scimitars, was called into action repeatedly, keeping a clean sheet in the first period with many good saves. The Scimitars worked hard to contain the quick skating Flames, testing Joe Watkins on several occasions, and nearly scoring on the powerplay during a melee round the goal. The period ended 0-0 with the Scimitars well outshot and with the Scimitars losing yet another player, Jon Woolhouse, after he was taken into the boards.

Guildford took the lead at 24.38 by Foremsky, with play going end to end and plenty of action in each zone but with Sheffield defending better. Peter Slamiar put the puck high past Watkins to equalise at 37.14, assisted by Dowd and the period ended 1-1 with some more good saves by Bowns.

Despite some shots on Watkins by Dowd, Slamiar and Moberg, it was Guildford who put away 4 unanswered goals in the third as they continued to press forward. Melicherik scored at 41.19, and Kohut scored two at 48.22, and then at 55.42 after some passing across the face of the net with Melicherik getting the final marker at 58.28 after a 2-on-1 chase down the ice. The Scimitars battled hard again but were undone in the third for the second time in the weekend. Bowns got a well-deserved MOM.
